I don't understand the point of 'engagement photos'. Aren't they just 'photos'?

I'm sorry, but the first one with the Asian Tom Thumb is epic...

And really, who wouldn't want a little plumber's butt in their engagement photo?

Isn't EVERY photo "just a photo"?

Not really. A Wedding photo is a record of a specific time recording an event that happens. Even if cameras weren't there, the event would still take place. Engagement photos just seem like a way of remembering a photoshoot. It would be like me winning a Nobel prize, then setting up a photoshoot of me and my award in a variety of 'hilarious' or 'poignant' poses that had nothing to do with the actual special day.

I agree, having fun with your spouse-to-be is a pointless activity. /end sarcasm

Now that I ended my sarcasm.
Normally the point to these is for creating save the dates, invitations, or other wedding related.

But also, it's just to have some nice photos of yourself as a couple. I still carry around a print from our engagement photo session in my wallet.

I used to have a link to the most bizarre engagement photo session EVER. The girl was naked and the guy was wearing a chicken costume. Don't get me wrong, the photos were great...just strange.

I suppose "memorable" is different for everyone. Some folks might think that getting engaged to the person of their dreams is memorable enough to capture.

I thought they were simply used to remember a time before your life was ruined. :D

Or memorable enough to remember the actual moment.

By the time you get to the engagement, the noose is already around your neck, you just don't know it yet.

I always try and do an engagement shoot with every wedding i do. I really enjoy them and include them in the price. They are a relatively new thing in the UK, brought over from the states, and not many couples expect them but it's a nice added touch. Here are my reasons for doing them...

1: It gives me a good chance to meet the couple beforehand and get to know them photographically so i've got a better idea of how they are in from of the camera. I'm very hands off doing the portraits on the wedding day so it's good for me to know if i might have to do a bit more prompting or posing if they are particularly uneasy or shy.

2: It gives me me a good chance to extend my portfolio in more creative and interesting way. On a wedding i generally only have around 30 minutes with the couple on their own and that means i can be tied to particular place. With engagement shoots i can spend a couple of hours or more trying out something different further afield. I tend to go to places that have a special meaning for the couple so that can be up a mountain and around abandoned quarries of their upbringing, or the sand dunes and seaside one remembers visiting as a child or the prehistoric White Horse of Uffington where the actual wedding proposal took place or even, for something different, just a stroll round a busy central London - Waterloo Bridge and Covent Garden and such.

Putting in the bit extra and doing some nice meaningful portraits will benefit me in the long run. I can push myself creatively and develop more of my own style and that'll feed into the wedding photography. I've already got a couple of bookings near the coast next year where the couples want to spend more time, get in the car, and do something more interesting with the portraits so that's how i hoped things would turn out.

The couples get some extra portraits, they get to know me as a photographer quite well, they sometimes use the images on invites/save the date cards, framed portraits on the day, or even a slideshow being played pre ceremony. It's a win win all round really.

I kind of get what you are saying about them not being *engagement* photos. They don't actually show an actual engagement in a way, and i've thought about changing the terminology to 'pre-wedding' sessions. Sometimes the couples have been together and engaged long before they meet me so it does seem slightly out. I think one way of doing an actual engagement shoot is those secret shoots where the photographer is only known to one party and keeps a distance as the actual proposal goes down. They're cute but a bit of a niche really.
