New computer. Win 8 default - upgraded to 8.1

Horrible experience. The new interface is just so un-intuitive. I thought i don't care about OS, Win or Mac, but this time MS got me down...

Some that I found really annoying: the online vs offline account. The full screen whatever is called metro applications. I double click on pics, it opens full screen, can not go back to desktop unless I alt+F4 or window button + D,

Using local account can not change desktop image. Seriously! I need to be connected to personalize my computer?

Yeah, my work computer was replaced by a Win8 machine. I can adapt to the Metro interface, but within days I installed "Classic Shell". I love the machine, now. It's very fast...

One of the benefits of the Windows environment has always been how easy it is, with a little internet research, to tweak it the way you want and replace what you don't like with the rich amount of shareware/freeware utilities out there.

I am researching and I do like to fiddle and discover new things.

I know that the problem with the double clicking and getting into metro has more to do with what the default app for viewing pictures is and I did fix it right away. My point is that I had to fix a lot of things and wasted my time. The blend of PC and tablet does not make it for me. I can see how metro works when you have a touch screen but with a keyboard and mouse (what I need to process my images) does not do it for me. Would be nice having an option when you install it to pick the UI for tablet, touch screen PC or just PC.

Regardless, the offline account is something that I dislike. For most of the apps in metro you are required to login and once it linked to the hotmail account it took over the local account. I deleted it and all the settings were gone. I had to start all over again.

And seriously, unless I am stupid and can not figure it out, why do I need an online account to set my desktop picture?

We can keep this thread to learn something.

Semi-stupid. It did require some research but i found a fix. It was related to changing the accounts and required to remove the background images, something I never heard before.

Now I have an issue with the scrolling using the track-pad. Its not so smooth and while swiping in Photos... Any idea how to adjust?

Just weighing in here.

Win 8.1, on a Surface Pro. It's like using a Nikon for the first few days (or Canon for you odd folks out there)... But after a bit, I've gotten used to it - not only used to it, but hell, I like it just fine. Admittedly, I have a touch screen, and I think that makes all the difference.
