...and that every citizen be forced to provide a DNA sample, have a locator chip implanted in their body, their fingerprints placed in a national data base.

Yep, works for me.

No need, we now have Area Persistent Stare. (ARGUS-IS). You can literally record an entire city for long periods of time.

It's time for these animal cops to actually face some real music. This animal needs to pay a huge price and the nation should know all about it. If it was reversed and the perp. had fatally shot the cop they would be looking for the death penalty.
The cell phone camera is the best thing that has happened to America in a long time.

There are only 2 things that will stop a cop that's a bully, that's a good cop or a video.
Which one would you rely on if you were harassed by a cop?
I choose the video.

Imagine that... and yet the rate of unsolved crimes is still rather impressive.

Go figure.

There is absolutely no doubt whatsoever that this police officer committed a crime and that he should face justice for his actions.

Havng said that, your comment seems to suggest that ALL police officers are guilty of this type of behaviour and are not to be trusted one iota.

Saddens me to think that people would have more faith in a recorder than their police, but judging by some of the news we have seen of late I can understand why.

Only because we're not using this yet. Give it 20 years and maybe we can just eliminate most officers with technology.

The ones who are complicit are nearly as guilty as the one who pulled the trigger, and it takes a department to pull off this sort of thing. I think the term is "blue wall of silence".

FWIW, I don't get the feeling at all that you were this way. But I'm still just a tiny bit shocked at that...

Another one, older. - still totally unjustified - the officer may have had some reason to shoot the first round or two, but the third shot was totally lagniappe.

Great... does that mean our taxes will go down?

The savings could be huge, also consider the reduction in lawsuits.
04/10/2015 09:06:16 AM · #210
Also consider the VERY real reduction in officer risk. Car accidents, trip and falls, physical violence, random shootings while sitting in a patrol car, etc. The savings is potentially exactly what will drive this forward.

For every bad cop there's a good cop that knows the truth and doesn't speak.
I don't know what's worse.

Someday we will need to sit down and talk about your experience with representatives from the field of law enforcement that enables you to make such a comment.

It is gratuitous and very insulting to those thousands of police officers out there who risk their lives on a daily basis.

Are there bad police officers out there, you bet there are and there does exist a need to identify them, weed them out and have them fact the music.

I probably know more about the police environment than most in this venue and can tell you that (in this country at least) they are the only individuals that can be charged with the same offence in two totally different venues.

I most definitely am not excusing the blatant illegal activities we have been witnessing of late, but I do find it sad that we as a society are quite ready to tar and feather a whole group because of the actions of a few.

Actually, all we would be doing is adding to the costs, unless of course the various departments are willing to get rid of some of the more military style of equipment.

The sad thing is that most police departments are being asked to cut back on expenditures and throwing something that will add costs in not likely to fly and get by those who control the purse strings.

If I'm not mistaken didn't you say you were a cop in a remote area of Canada?
Ray you don't know how good you have it but some day you'll have to take the blinders off. There is a whole world out there.
We don't all get to flash a badge and have an officer do an about face.

Gawd, it's pile on Ray day, and I'm sorry for that, because I damn well know you are one of the good guys.

So, on this point, you should recognize that I'm proposing a major staffing reduction, the equipment is cheap and of no consequence.

ETA: By major, I mean 75%.

Actually, in my years in the RCMP I worked on reservations, small communities, VIP Protective Services and IT Security. Have I worked in remote areas of the country, most assuredly, but I have also worked in places like Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa which are no so remote areas of Canada. I have also had the pleasure of working with security specialists from a variety of countries.

It may come as a shock to some, but I am quite familiar with a good portion of the world and probably have visited more of it than many on this site.

Your comment about flashing a badge might work where you are but I can assure you that it is not likely to work in these parts. We have seen police officers charged with domestic violence, speeding, DUI and a host of other crimes. I personally have paid for a few speeding tickets since I have always felt that the laws were for everyone and that by paying for a ticket I didn't owe anyone anything.

Sad that you have such a jaundiced view of the police in general, but then again I have no idea as to what you have experienced with the representatives of law enforcement.

Have a great day and the best of luck to you.

I would totally support that, particularly as it relates to the military type of equipment and the reduction of personnel who perform what is essentially and administrative functions.

I remember that prior to retiring the brass asked what I would do to cut some 20% of the costs, and I suggested major cut backs in all of the functions that could be performed by people other than police officers.

My job was cut and I retired from the RCMP.

Would I do it again... definitely. Truth be told, I much prefer my life post retirement from the police force.

"Fuck your breath"

Poor officer - ya gotta really feel for the guy, as he was apparently just the victim of a 'slip and capture'.. 100% the fault of the guy who died. Yep.

Turned himself in???

The cops should have gone to his house guns drawn beat the piss out of him and cuffed him in front of his family.

Oh wait this is the cop that shot someone not the other way around.

Never mind.

Saved by body cam

This guy is alive today because the cop had a body cam.

See you don't always have to shoot.

Some would claim it's because he's white(ish)...

Whatever the reality - it's a certainty that increased liability will increase responsible decision making (and will probably cost a few officers greatly for NOT pulling the trigger, but that's why we call them heroes isn't it??)

Not all that well versed in what you call police officers my friend, but I can tell you that most officers I have known have been called a lot of things, but Hero is not something that is all that common. :Ò)

Oakland is one of those places with a history of tense (sic) relations between the police and the population in general, but when four officers were killed in the line of duty there was a lot of support -- the service filled Oracle Arena -- and slide #2 indeed refers to them as heroes ...

Well, at least they're learning. This time it would appear they did the deed inside a locked van, away from pesky cameras.
