Photographer arrested for wearing two-finger ring...

Seriously, this is EXACTLY what I object to - the use of a pretty weak excuse to arrest or detain someone so they can perform a much more through assay of the person and their stuff in the hopes of locating something genuinely prosecutable. Why are we paying people to do this to us?

I can see how it could be construed as a weapon, but in a society that allows the carrying of firearms this seems a bit arse about face!

To be fair, they are illegal in NYC.

A few items of interest from my state today:

First, the happy news that the DA is charging the Boyd shooters with murder.

Secondly, last week we had an incident where one undercover officer shot two other officers during a bust. Details are still coming out, but it's looking more and more like the officer opened up without any clear danger being present, and they can't cover it up because the guy shot two cops. Hell of a mess for them, so much so that they STILL haven't interviewed the officer who shot the others. Yeah, read that last sentence again. SMH.

One other thing that really bothers me - the officer lived after being shot 4 times, while most suspects who are shot even twice by APD do not. Why? I suspect the answer is because the officer was given immediate emergency response, while the SOP usually seems to be to secure the scene before calling for medical. I fear the reason is simply that dead suspects can't testify in their own defense, and letting them die makes the job easier.

Also, it should be noted that the DA who is prosecuting the Boyd shooters is herself under investigation for trying to cover up her son's crimes, and potentially for bribing people.

As a final note, if you are under the impression that this is somehow new, or novel, behavior for this group, let me disabuse you of that notion. Take a look at the Levi Chavez case - start to finish.

Now the police have barred the DA from attending the briefing on yesterday's police killing.

On an interesting personal note, I just got records that show the head of the narcotics unit here ordered firearms returned to my mother after they were confiscated when she was arrested for running another motorist off the road and threatening them with a pistol.

This is doubly interesting because she is under a restraining order by me and another by my father (due to repeated death threats and several assault/battery incidents), which makes it a felony for her to be in possession of firearms.

When I asked a sheriff's deputy about this, his response was that the sheriff would never confiscate firearms out of a home.

You can argue gun laws all you want, but this is a superior example of the police completely failing to deal with a known mental case who has shown themself to be a threat, and is legally barred from firearm ownership. They KNOW she is armed, and couldn't give a shit less, largely because she is a valued informant.

To be fair Mike, maybe it is ONLY me here, but I'd like to think at least a few people read this shit and shake their heads in disgust.

I started this thread in 2013 - well before APD killed Boyd, and well before their sanction by the justice department, before the corrupt sheriff of Rio Arriba County pulled off that crap that got him nailed, and generally way before the nation was paying attention. Maybe I didn't make a difference, but surely someone speaking up did, and I think that the more people who know about what is going on in this state, the better.

Frankly, I think it kinda bites that I have to go back and forth between Florida and New Mexico, arguably two of the worst states in terms of police corruption and ineptitude. It would be really freaking nice if they would act with a bit more honor, professionalism and integrity...

To be fair, I was merely making a joke, it was an observation that you are the only one who has been posting in this thread for the last few months.

I have no comment on the content.

I read everything that's posted here with considerable morbid fascination, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. Think of it as Cory's public service thread :-)

Great video.

The best part is that he'd have been 'justified' if there wasn't a video.

I think we need to demand that EVERY second of every officer's day is recorded, without exception.

...and that every citizen be forced to provide a DNA sample, have a locator chip implanted in their body, their fingerprints placed in a national data base.

Yep, works for me.

Ray, don't you think that persons authorized to use deadly force on behalf of the state need to meet a higher standard than the ordinary citizen going about their daily business?

Works for me too! Once everyone has the mark of the beast, the Rapture will get rid of all these pesky Xtians.

Most assuredly... I am merely taking this to the next level.

Imagine how much easier it would be to solve crimes if all of these were implemented.

Sure ... for "on-duty" activities -- I don't think the post you were responding to literally meant we should video police in their bedrooms ...

We record the activities of lawyers and judges while operating in open court, why not the police while they are working as well?

ETA: Isaac's Marines recruiting sergeant assures me they are held to a much higher standard than the "ordinary" citizen ...
