Looks like the voters are not too happy with the entries, again.

Lets hope it doesn't go down too far from here (worst case), or keeps slowly climbing to get my first 6.X (better case!), or possibly even a ribbon (best case, but i don't expect this to happen!)

Commenting on 80-odd entries will be quite an undertaking, but I am up to the challenge. Abolishing commenting apathy one challenge at a time.

up to a 5.8500 at 20 votes!
this is the best start to a challenge i can remember since my PB entery.

Looks like Don is in the running for upper-middle-class with us Shane ;)

Must be sometimes a geographical explanation, or a climate related explanation for the first votes, without any comments.
Started with a slew of 4s.
Nice progression:

Happy score until Don voted. ;P

Just teasing -- I'm loving the comments side challenge. Thank you, Don, for the comment and the explanation. What a wonderful opportunity to see how the voters are approaching things.

Hopefully everyone will appreciate the insights, whether or not they agree with the votes or the comments. This is what I always hope for in comments -- honest, straight forward feedback on what works and what doesn't. What an incredible opportunity! I'm definitely going to try to do 100%.

(If you haven't seen the thread, there's a comment on every vote side challenge going on for this challenge. It's a little different than just commenting. Check it out.)

i got a comment in this way from Denielle (my only comment thus far) and i very much appreciate the comment and the time taken by those doing so.
i'll try to get some small chunks of time over the next few days to do the same.

Getting a whack of comments - 8 now - many of them very good. A couple of sub-5 votes hit the score within seconds of each other, but THAT isn't unusual at all now, is it?

down .2 overnight, but up 2 on comments...

not sure I like that trade off... call me shallow, but I'd rather have you all just silently bask in the glory of my genius...

;)

Seems like I'm either getting high or low scores given the fluctuation between single votes.

Not sure I deserved a 2 from one of my commentors though :(

Ouch.
Luckily the lowest I've received so far was a 5 (comment wise... I've received lower votes that were anonymous, as well).
But I'm sure that someone will give me a lower score and tell me why.

Just think of it as a learning experience. It gives you a look into the voter, to what they like and dislike, and why they vote the way they do.

I personally, feel this is a WONDERFUL side challenge... it helps people to understand more about the DPC voters...

Wow... Quite a rise to mid-6 for me... And some wonderful, in-depth critiques. Many thanks!

I do appreciate the feedback, and the commentor giving me a 2 gave the reasons which I appreciate. But another 2 for a reason of personal dislike is just strange to me. I suppose I'm not as critical or have as high expectations.. But I only give 2's for non conformity to challenge or picture taken with no intent.

If its a 2... Then that's the opinion of the community... But it does dishearten as opposed to encourage... I mean how could you ever get a 8-10?

I agree I have gotten some good critiques but I did get one that indicated they didn't like that type of picture. I rarely give very low scores either and there are some things I personally dislike but I am not going to score someone low because I don't like that particular type of photo or subject. I try to judge on the quality of the image

Both reasons for why you received a vote of 2 are perfectly valid. A single vote is a personal thing, and an opinion. How can we, as the viewer, not engage all things that influence our ways of viewing? I suppose one could, like sitting on a jury at a criminal trial, but this is not that. Or it would be, simply put...a halfassed way of seeing things. Don't let it get you down. If you really want those 8-10s, you should keep trying. And even when you get those 8-10s, you're still going to keep getting those 2s too. Growing hurts sometimes.

Rest assured that you're not the only one getting 2'd, esp when the commentor is making it plain that it's a matter of personal dislike and virtually nothing to do with the photo itself. Not many people can get past their personal dislikes of a subject.

Fer example I don't like creepy crawlies all that much, but will not automatically vote a pic down just because it has one in it. By the same dint I love horses but will not automatically give out a good score, unless the shot warrants it. I've given 9s to stellar shots of bugs (see roz for some stellar example of what I think are 9-worthy shots) and 4s to poor shots of horses, though not recently.
