What about natural backlighting? Does the light have to be artificial.

Nope, it just has to be behind a non-silhouetted subject.

Rather than starting another thread on this, (say) I have XXX subjects with backlighting, would it be ok to have Y image/s with side lighting?

I just posted my backlighting shot.

It might not fit the traditional idea of backlighting like the photo's posted above, but it is definately backlit. It's actually the only way to get this shot.

Hopefully everyone will realize that right away, and I don't get knocked on like in "Framing" because some people don't think it fits the challenge.

Please voters, think a little harder before you say it doesn't meet the challenge!

Please :)

No, I think I know what your gonna submit,
I thought about doing that, But I thought it might be to literal for most people.

Just a thought? is it alright for me to ask somebody to look at a submission idea of mine or is that just too taboo? I think I may be barking up the wrong tree here and really just want confirmation.

My image does not scream backlit either, but it is. And the only way I could get the shot to come out the way it did. I expect low scores. lol. Also my first challenge submission in months. I got really discouraged with my last camera, and am just coming around again. Hope they won't be too harsh. Good luck to all who entered...and even those who haven't yet.

also, while I'm thinking about it; backlighting does not have to be a light shining directly on the subject -- while that is backlighting, shining a light on the background is also backlighting.

The key to this is just to make the backlighting (whichever method used) a key part of the composition of the image. That is, a significant part of the impact of the image should come from the backlighting.

I hope you can do this because my entry is using natural backlighting. I think this challenge will have many good entries.

Good luck to all.

Do I need to have backlighting at all? I have taken a photo with no backlighting but I have done it as though the subject is being fully lit from behind by inverting, creating a negative effect. Would it be DQ'ed for this?

I have a perfect photo for this challenge!!!

.... Taken in June. :( I drove by the spot where it was, but it hasn't been there for a while, and won't be before the challenge ends.

You can't get dq'ed for not meeting a challenge, or for inverting an image. I'd say go for it. Just make it sub-par.. ;)

Another last minute entry for me. I am pretty happy with what I came up with and how it turned out. I hope it places in the top 3 because I only need 2 more ribbons to be able to compete in the masters challenge :)

I'm excited! This is my first challenge, and I had such a hard time deciding between two VERY different shots. I hope I picked the right one. GL all!

it's interesting...I took a risk with my picture in backlighting, assuming that people would read the instructions. it seems that my picture is being marked low (probably because people can't see what it has to do with backlighting.) But I think a lot of people are ignoring the part in the rules that says, "or lighting areas behind the object you want to highlight." too bad...cuz my photo rox! hehe jk

BradP, you are easy to pick out of the crowd. Congratulations on your next ribbon!
