New to the forum, and new to stock images. I have a couple of questions if someone here could advise please.

I've been living in Phuket, Thailand this last 3 years and I take lots of photos, I'm also a 3d visualiser so my first question is, is there a good stock site that accepts both photographic images and cgi ?

Second question, it seems from a quick search that photos including crowds need a signed release from everyone who is recognizable, I have many photo's from various festivals related to Thai tradition culture, are there any stock sites that would take them or are they useless as stock without hundreds of release forms?

thanks

I'm useless in answering your questions about stock and CGI.

On your other question though, unless the photo is sold/presented as an editorial photo (specific to that event), it is my understanding that you would need releases for all recognizable people.

But I really just posted to say welcome! Hope you'll join us in some challenges! :D

Shutterstock will accept illustrations in either EPS or JPEG format, and is consistently one of the top revenue-producers among microstock sites, but is also one of the harder one to qualify for at first.

Before you start there though, research whether you want to go into microstock or traditional rights-managed stock (Getty, Corbis, Alamy) -- you can do both, as long as you don't have the same images available both royalty-free and rights-managed.

Track down the Microstock Users group (search for links in the Forums here) to get a lot more info on stock photography ...

ETA: As Cory said, you'll need releases for recognizable people unless the photo is only for editorial use. You'll also need a property release for some well-known buildinga/landmarks: Special Releases List

Hi Cory and GeneralE .thanks for the replies and the welcome. So the festival pics could be used but only in the context you mentioned, say for a magazine article specifically about that particular festival, most of the festival photo\'s are from the \'vegetarian festival\', that might sound a bit boring but it\'s not, it\'s one you may be familiar with were people dress in traditional garb and pierce themselves with sharp instruments, then at night the whole town explodes with fireworks, I was temporarily deaf after shooting the first one.

My camera isn\'t the best on the market but I really like it, panasonic gf1, using mostly an olympus 17mm lens, still learning how to use all the functions.

I\'ll probably have to re think my subjects for stock imagery, a lot of my photos have people in them, another subject I\'ve covered quite a bit are buildings in old town Phuket and Penang.

With the cgi, for objects like cogs, currency, tools, musical instruments and the more symbolic type imagery,I can get good clean realistic renders, and play with a few cgi / photo composites. I guess the idea is to find out what is in demand, I\'ve only looked for a couple of hours but there seems to be plenty of info out there.

I have a few photo\'s on flickr from a couple of years ago though none were taken with stock in mind, all a bit random and, from what I\'ve read exactly the type of images you shouldn\'t bother with as there is an overload, ... if there is one image there that would be good for stock it would have to be the Chinese tea preparation in the aluminium pot. I'll have to make another flickr site for more recent photo's I think I might have improved .... a bit.

I tried to post the flickr url is that not allowed?

Posting links is blocked for a little while after you join -- we've had some problem with spammers in the past. You should be able to post links soon. Most of the stock sites have links/tools to see what are the most popular images.

If you look for links to popular images, I have created a link list //stock.hlehnerer.com/Resources.html "What type of images do sell?". You can also go to //www.shutterstock.com/ search for a topic and sort the search result by "Popular".

Alamy is probably a good site for editorial image too. It is more and more dificult to get editoria image accepted at Shutterstock. Here are some tips on how to write the description to editorial images by Shutterstock //www.shutterstock.com/buzz/creating-the-perfect-editorial-caption
