Hi everyone, I am pretty new to DPC. I have entered a few challenges in the last month and I have to say that I enjoyed the minimal editing much more than the advanced and expert editing. I would have liked to be able to crop the image but other than that it actually feels more like a photography contest than an image manipulation one.

I would love it if more minimal and basic editing challenges would come up.

Another thought I just had (which does not happen very often) would be a challenge where like in diving competitions there would be a "difficulty" factor which would be applied to the score depending on which set of editing rules you used.

Say if you used minimal editing you score would be multiplied by 1.0. If Basic editing multiplied by 0.95, advanced editing by 0.90, expert editing by 0.85. This I think could level the playing field between people that are very well versed in the art of photoshop and those that aren't and more people might try to stick to minimal editing rules because the score would be multiplied by a higher factor. (the factors I just pulled out of my hat now but I think the concept came out clear).

Just my 0.02$

I don't get it...

Anyway, score is not important for me and the prize is just a virtual ribbon.

If your average score is 5.500 and you used minimal editing your adjusted score would be 5.5 x 1= 5.5.
If you used Basic editing your score would be 5.5 x 0.95=5.2250, if you used advanced editing it youd be 5.5 x 0.9=4.95, if expert editing 5.5 x 0.85=4.6750.

This kind of implies that getting a high score using expert editing tools is easier than using no tools at all.

First off, Welcome to DPC, Goose. :)

Which is not necessarily the case and there would be endless debate over what the handicap should be or exactly what specific type of expert or advanced editing were used. I get what you are driving at, but I know from my nearly 9 years in this hell-hole* that the concept won't get past this thread for a myriad of reasons.

My advice: Enjoy shooting for yourself and if you do care about scores and believe that more advanced editing skills are required, then improve your skills. Mostly just have fun and the learning will come naturally.

*Note: I'm using "hell-hole" as a term of endearment in this instance. ;-)

Hello, welcome man :)

My thoughts:

Minimal editing is a very interesting ruleset. It allows us to try cool stuff directly on camera. I'd like to have some more of them.

Basic editing is simply meaningless. It's like advanced but without spot editing. It's like having a Ferrari on a road where the speed limit is 50 kmh.

Advanced editing IMO is the best solution, so thanks God for having many of them :)

Expert editing sometimes is a little far from photography but requires great editing skills and every now and then is good to have one.

As for the score, I strongly disagree for several reasons: I won 2 minimal editing challenges wih scores over 7.2 and 7.3, so it's not necessarily true that the scores are lower. Expert scores are usually higher but it depends on the voters and don't forget how difficult can be a composite (and not only the editing stage of your work, but also taking the right images for that).

My thoughts:

You are a new boy.

You will learn.

Have fun.
