Having travelled out there last summer, I find these photos very interesting. |

Great series -- thanks for posting!
I found a couple of typos/errors in the captions (not simply due to "British English" differences), and I'm amused by the little copyright notice they've slapped onto the bottom-left of each picture -- these are far to old to be protected by US copyright law, and since they were made for the US Government, should be in the public domain anyway. |

It was an interesting series and considering what he had to go through to take them, very good quality. One thing I noticed and found interesting was, with most pictures you see of that period of time on up into the early 1900's, everyone has rifles and pistols all over the place. Other than the few bows and arrows the indians had, I didn't see any weapons. Even if the indians were friendly, they should have had them for snakes and other wild animals that probably had very little fear of man. I wonder if that is because he didn't dress up his subjects like other photographers or if they were trying to portray the area as non-hostile so as not scare off settlers?
Very interesting in any event.

| MikeJ, I noticed that also. I think it's because as you said he didn't 'dress' them up. He portrayed them as he saw them, which really goes to show how we're used to having both the Western settlers and the Native Americans presented to us. |
