A challenge for pixel peepers. DPC photos often look great at reduced pixel dimensions...but can you capture a clean image even when forced to show at 100%?
"Capture any subject with the best pixel peeping picture quality. Crop but don't reduce the photo to meet DPC size requirements."
Basic or Advanced Editing.
(Of course, the trick is also to compose so when you crop to 800 pixels you still have your subject where you want them!)

| i love the sound of this, but fear the consequences. i'm definitely up for it though, and it's truly a challenge that touches on many of the principles of the site. the only problem may be the 300kb limit; i guess start saving with maximum quality to see how many notches you have to knock it down in order to get at/under 300kb |

Perhaps worded poorly...you will still have to be at 800 pixels max so there should be any new problem with 300kb. It would be even cooler if we could do a challenge where you could zoom in and view at 100% like we do on our own computers, but that's asking too much (and also issues of theft)
The hardest part will be making sure your image looks good at 100% and then of course isolating your subject in a 800 pixel max crop.
Also basically a technical free study, but subjects that lend themselves to being shown in part will be the easiest to shoot. Or else shoot from further away.
Just thought it was something we all need to do...get the quality at 100% for printing, etc. So a good technical challenge. |

The 300KB limit should not be any more relevant than usual -- you are saving the same number of pixels, just the pixels you save must be taken directly from the captured image without any resampling.
Another way to go is to just set the camera to capture "web-sized" (usually 640x320) images directly; then you could go with Minimal editing if you want ... however, that makes it more of a compositional (and lighting) challenge rather than concentrating on the proposed "technical" aspect of the challenge.

To create a 100% 800 pixel crop
1. Open the image in Photoshop.
2. File - New - (fill in the width and height) max 800 pixels
3. Go to image - Select - All - Edit - Copy
4. Go to new 800 pixel image - Edit - Paste - then choose "Move tool" Mouse pointer to move around and frame.

I like this one.
SC should have fun validating these, we may set a record number of DQ's if people don't have a proper understanding what a 100% crop is or how to achieve it.

Whoa -- difficult challenge!! In nature photography, it's hard to get something that looks really good at 100%. It's one of the few times that the 800 pixels is kind of nice -- that and sharpening...

| The whole looks very complicated to me. As for the camera settings: the lowest I can get is 2592x1728 in JPG. But another minimal challenge would be nice. |

that works since it means you can still use about 1/3 of your image when you crop to 800px from the base image. higher resolutions mean more cut to get to 800px without 'resizing'. |

then divide it into 9 and use only 1 part out of it to frame composition. Just nice for 100% 800 x 531 pixels.
1:1 square will be smaller than 3:2
