Long time ago we had a cousin site to here where you were given a file to edit then the edits themselves were judged. Was fun to see how people changed the photo given.

Only rule here is that you must use the RAW File provided, and you must list all steps you took in the editing. This way we can teach each other techniques.

If you are interested in joining in on this, PM me your email and I'll send you the Drop Box location for the RAW file.

You'll have one week to do the edit and then submit to this thread, and if it takes we'll get a RAW file from someone else next week.

First Challenge ...

Remember PM me your email to get the RAW file.

Can I get a better picture? That one is uninspiring.

Next week we'll have a different one.

Can you post a TIFF or JPEG version for those who don't/can't work with RAW files?

I have the original CR2, the original JPEG, and a DNG converted from the latest CR2 to Raw Version 5.2 will be happy to give any version I can for anyone who needs it differently.

That works. I'd rather have you wait til the next one than turn my daughter into an Ogre, I kinda like her :).

I think we should find a way to vote on the best edit

There used to be a whole site dedicated to it, with official voting and everything. It was tied in to our accounts here, but that was many years ago.

We could vote, by leaving your 1-10 in a comment on the edit.

I would expect a small group so a comment about why you voted how you did maybe?

I agree with Mike that this one had very limited possibilities. Here's my random-ish stab at something artsy...

-Opened DNG file in Camera RAW, set exposure to +3.00
-Neat Image: Reduce Noise
-LucisArt / Wyeth @ 60, then undo, then history brush some of it back in at 20%
-Crop
-Fractalius filter (tried some random ones till I got what I liked, applied, then faded effect 50%)
-Increase saturation +65
-Gaussian Blur 30 pixels, then undo much of it in the center around the face in 35% increments with the historyu brush
-Filter Gallery Effect: Diffuse Glow
-Liquify - gave her mouth a little more of a smile
-Added frame (Acid Burn)
-Resize to 800px tall

To summarize: I just futzed around and threw stuff at it and messed with it until I got something I liked. This was a tough one because of the very limited exposure.

eta: Yeah, I don't have a portfolio, so you can't comment on the image except in this thread. Not a big deal, I hope.

a week seems long, how about a new person post a pic everyday? is this forum hidden from non-members? if so we can just post the link to the image without worry someone on the net will take it.

How about 3 days. First person to post back an edit, gets to choose the next one 3 days later, and editing your own doesn't count.

Uh, sure, though I might be exceptionally busy for the next couple of weeks and not be able to spend a huge amount of time on them.

Yrs, I know I frequently took part. And we have also run very similar side challenges with voting etc (One example thread)

FWIW the "small" JPEG you posted is about 50% larger than the largest picture my camera can take ... :-)

GeneralE i give it a try but there are noise appear in the body, do you any idea how to cure the shadow noise?

I use an old noise-reduction program called PictureCooler sometimes, but I didn't on this. There are lots of other noise-reduction programs out there, some free, and Photoshop and several other plug-in sets do as well.

You can also try duplpcating the layer, applying the Gaussian Blur filter to it, and erase it away where you want to keep things sharp (eyes/glasses in this case). Finally, you can play with the opacity of the blurred layer.

Another consideration is that when you resample the image down to DPC size (around 800 pixels) a lot of those little noisy specks will probably go away, and you can always paint/clone out any which remain.
