How about a speed challenge (or regular) for this? :)

Curious how many are going to give shooting this a go? I'm not much of a MOON photographer, so I'm thrilled it will be 6:00 a.m. where I am for perigee. :)
Any suggesions? And for anyone not sure what the heck I'm talking about, here is a link! :) Better articles, but can't find the original one I read, lol.

Checked out rental of a super lens for this... $25 a day plus an $800 deposit. oosh.

6 am here too, might be fun, I'm usually up by then if I could get far enough away from the bustle of the city.

Moonset is at 07:20, and at only three hours past full it should look larger near the horizon. A picture of it setting over the Santa Monica Pier might be nice ... :-)

This would be the perfect challenge to try out the idea of Advanced editing, with a special rule that multiple captures of different scenes could be used. This would allow for Star Trails and combining of longer exposure shots where scenes change, but not take the challenge in to the expert level and bring in the digital art (personally, I like the digital art, but I know many don't) I just think a little flexibility with night shots would help attract a larger crowd, unlike the basic challenge we just had that garnered a whopping 25 entries.

i could setup a tripod with a timer or remote to give you guys a REAL supermoon.... you'd revoke my member status afterwords, but it would totally be worth it ;p

i might shoot it to add to my catalog for future use as a prop in a composite of some sort. I m not sure what i can do with the moon alone without further editing. The city behind feels overdone..

Maybe i'll challenge myself to try to see something unique in there...

Bah, moonrise obscured by clouds. Hopefully others got to get a great view and shot.

Overcast moved in here last night as well -- I got up and couldn't find the Moon behind the clouds so I gave up.

Got up about 4:30 headed west to a place overlooking a valley, but no moon, just clouds. Had a nice drive though :)

I thought the supermoon was this morning and tonight. Was it last night?

I went out tonight to shoot it over Schenectady City Hall tonight. Moonrise was supposed to be 8:44PM according to a calculator on the internet. We got there 8:30, to find a good spot, and then waited until 9:15 until the moon showed up. It was pretty cool, but it was about 20 minutes or so before it would be over City Hall, and we couldn't wait.

Two days ago, I took a picture of a virtually full moon over the river at 8:34, and it was already off the horizon. I guess I just don't understand the moon!

I chased her on the hills but she teased me only with shadows. Got soaked in sweat and rain at night... Hell of a hike but no moon. When I finally got home she smiled from behind the clouds and said that my cat knows why.

You know, it was only within the last few years that I really started to understand how the moon moves, and it's cycles.

Really darn cool and satisfying, but it's a little bit of a thing to get your head around.

Here's the easy version:

The moon will be full on the day that it rises exactly as the sun sets. Before this time, the moon will rise before the sun sets. After, it will rise later into the night. The sun rises just before the moon sets on the morning after a full moon.

Since the super moon challenge didn't happen, here's my stab at it using a double exposure in camera technique.

Anyone else get anything to see?

I was so ready in a lovely spot well before time, thanks to my Photographer's Ephemeris, but the cloud cover was too thick in Brisbane, Australia :-(

Wow, it had never even occurred to me to consider that set of relationships. How very interesting..... thanks for enlightening me, Cory!

Well I went out at 6:20 a.m. this morning in an attempt to get a good moonset of the Supermoon. Not as great as I hoped but had some wonderful moments.

I was hoping to get a flock of birds flying by but this was the best:

While waiting for that flock of birds that never happened I glanced behind me to see the lovely sunrays

Turning back I to look at the setting moon, I noticed a very faint rainbow of the the left of the cloud. I wish that the moon and the rainbow were closer so they were larger but that is not to be. And I wish that the rainbow was stronger in vibrant colors but such as it was it was still fabulous to observe live.
