i've seen several people comment that they recently RETURNED to DPC after being gone for a period of time.

as we have a fair number of people who complain and threaten (empty or otherwise) to leave DPC-land, i'd invite those who have gone away and then come back to tell us all WHY they came back...

Well I went away because I simply couldn't compete with some of the photographers here - neither the time nor the skill. There are some photographers here who seem to have a permenant ribbon slot on the front page and I didn't feel my images were good enough to be honest. I joined another 'lesser' site that shall remain nameless but the steam seems to have gone out of it and I also found myself thiking "ah well this image isn't great but its good enough for [nameless] site" whereas with DPC I found it always made me strive to be better.

Since leaving I took a job that took me well out of my comfort zone and so I decided to go for some 'mindefullness therapy' .... which I must say as a trained physiologist (biologist) the reasoning behind this therapy sound a load of bunkum - but I have to say it jolly well worked and now I am much more at ease with myself and the world ...

... with the knock on consequence that now I'm much more at ease with the fact that there are always going to be much much much better photographers than myself but I jolly well should be able to achieve hitting photographs into the top 25% of each competition I enter. And with that slightly more realistic aim I came back.

I didn't purposefully leave, but just got busy with life and my photography took a side seat to other things. However, as ineedauniquename mentioned, I returned when my need for a creative outlet took over earlier this year, and I dusted off my DSLR. Being here keeps me on my toes by seeing the wonderful work of so many great photographers here as well as forcing me to go out and take pictures regularly.

I haven't really competed on other sites much, so I have nothing to compare it to.

I have never left.

BUT... I always come back ... because... I love the knowledge people have always offered me... the support of the friends I have made here... the comments that help me grow... and the fact that I'd never have the photography business that I have now... if it weren't for DPC.

What a great place!

Complain if you like... but ... it's a great place to learn photography and make friends.

How can an entire thread be off topic? Are you a Dadaist? Or is it because you put it in the wrong forum?

the comments from people coming back were from the Current Challenge threads... so i figured to make sure THEY saw it, i would post it in same forum (instead of somewhere else where they might not see it).

I've "left" several times for varying lengths. I've not even fully returned to member status in six months. I think I come back for the same reasons I can't quit drinking or quit other things that are probably killing me. I'm just really screwed up and I feel at home here.
