I thought this challenge was supposed to be about funny or interesting road signs and I'm kind of dissapointed about not seeing much of that. There are a lot of good pictures visually but without an "interesting" or funny/odd road sign, I find it hard to give high marks even if the picture is technically good.

Has anyone else noticed this at all or feels the same way? My pic is averaging about 5.28 so far but I thought it would do a lot better because the sign is pretty interesting and my Title adds even more interest to it.

How's your picture doing? For those that don't mind saying I'd be interested in:

1) What's your current average score

2) What type of picture is it:

a) Geared more towards visual pleasure and not so
much the sign.

OR

b) Geared more toward what the sign says and its
meaning, and not so much the appearance of the
picture.

Funny and Interesting weren't mentioned in the challenge description...

i went for the funny approach and all I got was a 4.84. Maybe I am not as funny as I thought I was.

Naked pictures of the Pope at //www.pbase.com/wheeler1992/wheeler1992 (okay I really don't have naked pictures of the Pope I was just trying to get people to look at my pictures)

Yeah I guess I just assumed that. Before the challenge I typed in "road signs" into Google to search for similar subjects, and the hits I got were all pictures of "funny", or ironic, or interesting signs in some way, because of what they SAID and because of the title the person gave to them, so I guess I thought that's this challenge would also be like that. But I know it's really hard to find signs like that.

Well, it's hard to do that AND make an interesting photographs. Many such images are documentary in nature (I know because I have a personal collection of them). I personally went the funny sign route, even though the photograph is not as interesting as the sign, and I'm scoring sub-5. Other photographers chose to use the sign as part of a creative composition. In those cases the sign becomes a prop much as in the pencil challenge, for example. Others did interesting things like macro shots or illusions. I think there are excellent photographs among all those types of submissions.

The challenge was this: "This week marks DPChallenge's first birthday, so let's see what 'Road Signs' submissions look like one year later! Have fun, and good luck!"

The original (January 2002) challenge was: "Take a photograph of a road sign or road signs found anywhere throughout the world. Be Creative, and Good Luck!"

Try looking the submissions over again, but instead of using your existing notion of the challenge, consider the direction the photographer was trying to take you with his or her submission. I think you'll be pleased with what you see.

I could'nt agree more. I did'nt see anything about humor. Mabey your getting confused with the previous weeks challenge.

They are right it does not say anything about humor, but personally in this challenge and all others I usually score funny pictures higher.

Does the challenge topic have to define all of a photo's characteristics? The description didn't mention humour at all, so I can't see why this means they have to be serious.

i think the point was it doesn't "have" to be anything at all, other than a road sign . . . :)

My Road Signs photo is holding steady at 5.6 and it is neither funny or interesting. However I feel it is technically strong with dead-on focus and exposure. That'll only 'yield' me an average score.

They don't have to be serious. But they don't have to be funny either. Mine was funny. But that doesn't mean that I'll vote serious entries lower because the photographer took the challenge in a different direction.

Mine is holding at 5.0. The photo has a hook that I don't think people are picking up on. Instead they are getting hung up on something else in the photo. I had just plain old road signs with beautiful backgrounds that would probably have done better.

mine is doing 4.7 :-( but I admit it's not great.
You know what ? I think this was a difficilut challenge.
For Landcape I was doing 5.7 and thought all the week I would be in the top 1/3 ... nah .. scores where pretty high , I think for this one the average would be that of a 'difficult' challenge.

I wanted to enter a picture that had some interest to it other than just a picture of a sign. I wanted the sign to relate to the entire composition in order to give it meaning. I was also trying to get some "wow" in the picture by photographing a scene one wouldn't see very often. I did not use a typical road sign like a stop or speed limit or a street name sign. I did use a sign that was intended to be read by someone passing by on the street so I thought that was valid. I did have one individual say he/she would have given me a 10 except for the fact that he did not consider my sign a road sign. He/she said he gave me a 7 because of that. I feel a road sign is any sign intended to be read from the road. What do you all think? My average score so far is about a 6.1.

I think what you say is true. I'll give good votes for a technically good photo, but it has to do something more than that to go above 7. I tend to give 5 for "there's nothing wrong with it, but it just doesn't have anything really good either" and work from there. The one's I give nine to are normally ones that make me go "Wow" on first inspection, and then "Wow" again when I have a close technical look at the photo.

For what it's worth I went the humour route and am scoring 5.2. Not bad since I know the image has a technical flaw.

Don't decimal places appear on your PC?

I thought you were only allowed to submit one photo per contest?

Ok, they are really poor jokes - I apologise in advance for not being funny.

OK... I need to go to bed, or I'm going to get to into this and then I won't be able to go to work tomorrow morning.

THanks for the laugh. :)

I focused more on the interest of the sign itself, and didn't try to make a nice looking picture from it. I'd think that would be the purpose of taking pictures of road signs. :) Who knows. And because of that, I gave even awesome pictures (visually appealing) relatively low scores and higher scores if the sign itself was interesting in what it said and it's meaning, irony, etc. Although I bended the rules (mine) and gave one photo a 10 even tho the sign didn't say anything interesting. Couldn't help myself with a couple of them. :)

Good luck in the challenge!!

I also thought they were going to be humorous...The "Church vs. State" was a find....My picture is averaging over 5....I used positioning the camera...as a tool..to get across my message..the sign was a common West Coast sign..I don't think the joke came across...maybe Serial Killing isn't a joke...lol....some pictures are quite interesting.. I gave a couple of 10's....for visually stunning....which mine wasn't..I went with the humor....

So do the "Top" lists at BBspot.com -- which is, I believe, where I originally came across the link to DPC!

after the 1st few votes sunday night, my 'both visual&sign' entry was in the mid 7s

but by mid-morning on Monday, it was in the mid 4s

slowly creeping back up to the middle of the scale
