EXCUSE ME YOU WEREN'T THE ONE THAT SAW WHAT WAS SAID...!

Precisely, lionelm has no way of knowing the wording of the comment, and so far has only been told that the comment mentions problems with the focus and graininess...I believe the comment was therefore based on information, not inference or projection...

That being said, I too find the comparison of even a deliberately rude comment here at DPC and other situations in the world (ever really think what it would be like to starve to death -- or watch your child do so -- in this world of diet clinics and heart disease?) a distorted perspective.

In these circumstances I try to adopt a Marxist approach (Groucho, not Karl) -- I don't need to take seriously the opinion of anyone who'd write a comment like that, ergo no problem -- it's not true what they said anyway.

don't let one comment discourage you. Hell if I got a nickel for every bad comment I could buy this site and change it so that I would always win. But in reality I look back at my comments after the challenge is over and most of the time they are very helpful.

...my photo is to small, grainy and out of focus...

I just want to add my 2 cents. That is not a rude comment it sounds more like a critique. Was there more in the comment. Or do you just want praise?

You may be right but it also has to deal with results...oh well

Nothing you posted from the comment is anything I would consider rude. If the comment went on to be rude, then fine, I'll take your word for that. If, on the other hand, the comment attempted to offer constructive critique then that's what this site is all about. It's your choice whether it's something that can help you become a better photographer or something to ignore.

That said, if there was something truly rude or inappropriate please feel free to private-message me (use the link in my profile) or contact an admin using the "Contact Us" page. Personal attacks are not tolerated.

Thanks,
Terry

I personally like to be praised. Any comment that does not have the words 'great/excellent/magnificent/outstanding' will NOT get a useful thingy.

How rude these people are, who tell me that my photos are overexposed/out of focus/too dark/too bright....I'VE BEEN TAKING PHOTOS FOR 6, COUNT THEM, 6 MONTHS...I KNOW what I'm doing, you don't.

</sarcasm>

For those of you who are having problems with comments, chill out...myself and many others went through the same stuff at the beginning. You WILL learn to read them, ignore them, and go on. Just go back to previous challenges and read the comments on some of the top 10 finishes, and you'll see that even those photos get the occasional 'this is crap, and i don't know why you even submitted it' comment.

have fun, learn

It's me. I made the comment and here it is "Too small, too grainy, poor focus.. Cub". It is a critique. There is no malice intended in the comment. Instead it is offered to be used for your own purposes. I don't feel that it was cruel or insensitve. My own photos receive those comments and are duly noted the next time I submit to a challenge. I understand weather. My being in Hawaii doesn't mean I have perfect conditions. However, focus is not always a byproduct of the weather. When these are critiqued, the people viewing the photo do not always understand the photographers intent. I quite often am voted down because folks can't read my mind. Also, you can send me an email when you have concerns over what I wrote. You don't have to take it to a forum. I applogize if my comments offended you. However, I assure you that you will see critiques you don't like from time to time. It's best to take what you want and ignore the rest. Good Luck...

I thought this was going to be a friendly competition but like Photochix seems to have stated, some not so nice person had the consideration to be degrading!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You said you looked it up and the person was from Hawaii. Was it me? I do not think so. Please post a copy of the degrading and rude remarks.

Oh.. I almost forgot. Since I'm on an island, and it's hard to travel to take contest photos, I can't hide the fact they are mine. Well, it could be the guy in Kuaui. In any case I guess I can expect to have my photos voted down. Oh well, I was so looking forward to being published! ;-)

Smile and learn. It's a short life.

Cub. I have to say congrats! You are the only person in Hawaii that is currently commenting on photos and taking pics. So Keep it up. The fact that the photos are yours are totally invisible from me, cause I don't know what Hawaii looks like, and wouldn't know it from a photo of China. So, your secrets safe with me. lol.

[quote=Cub]It's me. I made the comment and here it is "Too small, too grainy, poor focus.. Cub". It is a critique.

That was a poor choice of things to say!!!! First of all the poor focus was done intentionally, one sign is perfectly focused while the rest are out of focus, thats part of the disadvantage of using an auto focus. Although I did use the old trick of depressing the shutter release part way to lock my focus in on the one sign then moved it off to the side slightly and out of center. As for the size that was my error when I resized. As for the graininess of the photo I checked the file just now it is not grainy, the only thing I can figure is I loaded it during the time yesterday when the site was having problems and it could have lost the quality in the upload.

Might I suggest in the future if you have to spread your negativism first of all you explain yourself in detail as to your feelings and also don't be afraid to point out good things in the photo. Things such as composition, the idea, was it framed using things in the enviroment...and so on, your remarks won't be so harsh and also will be taken as being much more informed and you won't seem as uneducated in your remarks.

Instead of trying to be spiteful cause it was done to you in the past next time try saying something like..."I'm not sure if you did it on purpose but the photo to me appears out of focus. Was that intentional or do you need some advice. It also appears grainy you may need to check your settings. Finally it is small if you reduced the photo do you know that you can have a photo as large as 620?" Really softens things up when you say more than focus, grainy and too small doesn't it?

Also when you say it the way I did you are stating it is only your opinion and offering to help the person and also reinforcing the fact that the size was small and they could have went a lot larger. Also keeps things from getting out of hand and doesn't hurt someone when you point out the faults with a bit of poiletness. Why not try it next time.

Finally keep in mind its cold on the mainland! That picture was taken on a day when the temp was -4 F. I didn't waste time with my tripod, I got the photo and for it not to be blurry is a feat in itself. I know you can't tell the temp but just remember not everyone has wonderful warm tropical weather.

if out of focus, grainy and small bothers photochix so much maybe she should consider another site. From experience I can tell her that the some of the future comments are probabily going to be worse. Take what you want out of the comments and forget the rest. It does no good to get so upset over a comment.

Not to sound negative, but I have to agree with Cub. I'm afraid I don't see anything in focus... but that's because of the resizing issue. Frankly, I don't have time to write such sugar-coated replies all the time, especially when there are almost 200 submision. JMHO.

I would much rather have comments like "small, grainy and out of focus", than comments completly irrelevant to anything like "SPONGEBOB RULZ". I would in fact appreciate these comments. I would learn from them. I would say hmmm, why did this person say this and how can I fix it? Just my 2 cents. Oh by the way, it was really cold and windy the day I took my pic, and my tripod wouldn't hold still, so please score it higher. Also, I didn't have a chain saw with me to remove objects that I didn't like and couldn't work around. Mine is the one with the road sign in it. Thanks

From my point of view, it's a fine critique... Straight forward and to the point. Please don't start sugar coating comments... I prefer straight forward, blunt comments that tell me what I did wrong. One of the best comments I received (and I got the same comment from several people that week) was "Boring"... At first I was insulted, but upon reflection, I was enlightened. My photo WAS (is) boring. The beauty of this site is that commenters tell it like it is.

PhotoChix, by entering a photo here, you are asking for comments. Don't get upset when you get them.

I agree, I don't see anything wrong with Cub's comments, I may have expounded a bit more than him, but it is still critiquing. I would be excited just to get a comment. Last compition I only received 5 total. At least Cub takes the time to critique a lot of shots and I appreciate that, and to be honest his critque was more helpful on yours than on mine (Sorry Cub but it is the truth)I am here to learn and that is the attitude I take, I look back at every comment and try to see what they saw. So far I usually agree with the comments, if not Oh well, everyone is entitled to their opinion. I don't understand what Cub living in Hawaii has to do with any of it. We all have weather related issues to deal with, I am sure Cub does to, that is just part of the game/challenge. I hope you take a little less offense, sit back look at your shot and think about what is said. Stick around there is a lot to learn here and it does seem to be a bit addictive after a bit.

When this is about the photo I think it is, Cub was in fact still being nice. They could be a lot worse.

It isn't grainy, no, its messed up by using the wrong resampling algoritm, it is resized with a pixelpicking only algoritm. That messed up the pixel mapping and that's why it looks grainy and unsharp. I can figure it is completely in focus, but the choice of resizing ends up with an oversharpened result (that looks in fact out of focus). It simply screams poor post processing.
And that is what the comment told you. I'd suggest looking into resampling and sharpening methods too avoid this on a next submission.

The upload to the site has nothing, absolutely nothing to do with this.

And thus photochix, you have learned your first nuggets of wisdom from dpc: 1. Post processing is important. Learn from this. 2. Thicken your skin and take what you can from the comments. Learn from this. 3. By submitting a photo, you are exposing yourself to both helpful and derrogetory comments (though i dont think Cub's was in the latter category). Learn from this. 4. Learn from this. Better luck next challenge. </discussion>

Well put Moondoggie! Here's some additional wisdom for your reading pleasure.

[Irony]
Speaking of poor choice in words, let’s take a look at what you said. You’re trying to justify the focus issue by saying that it was poorly focused intentionally because of the auto focus that your camera uses. Auto focus is done automatically and you have little to no control over it, hence why it is called Auto focus.

Yet, you say the poor focus was done intentionally? What a conundrum you’ve created here! If the auto focus was the cause of the poor focus then it was done automatically not intentionally, no? Musashi’s Ancient Buddhist Wisdom: Before labeling another’s words which were meant to be simple constructive criticism as poor, perhaps one should look to one’s own use of vocabulary first!

Most contests have rules, especially photo contests. While on the photo submission page, there is a link to the rules that is quite obvious placed so that newcomers will be able to see it. If you had read the rules page, you would have been aware of the fact that submissions can be up to 640 and as large as 150mb. In conclusion, the underlying meaning of the above is not meant to insult you Photochix, but to try and make you realize how ridiculous you are being. The reason this has become so blown out of proportion is predominately your fault. In my opinion Cub’s comment wasn’t bad at all, and was actually helpful in relation to comments I’ve received on some of my photos which were much more insulting.

You seem to have a very high opinion of your work (which is a good thing), but from what you said above; you’re trying to vehemently justify your photo’s quality and validity despite flaws that others see in it. Flaws that perhaps may be accurate observations. You also complain about how tough your shooting situation was, and that you didn’t set up your tripod. Guess what, it’s been below zero the past few days here, and that’s why I didn’t go outside to look for / shoot any signs. This isn’t a matter of life or death here. If you don’t put the effort into the photo or simply don’t have the time, then don’t submit. But don’t be surprised when you get a low score and negative comments and try to use poor shooting conditions as an excuse to garner sympathy (which is what it seems this whole thread has been about).

As others have already said, you’re going to need to get a lot less emotional / frustrated over things if you continue to post photos here. DPC is a place to try and improve your photo ability, not an ego massage parlor for photographers. In all sincerity, as a relatively new member here myself, I hope that you continue to compete at DPC. Try not get so worked up over inutile criticism in the future because the commenter didn’t leave a dissertation on why he/she feels that way. :)

I want to start by appologizing to Cub my reference to Hawaii was made by mistake. I did receive a comment from him which I didn't really agree with, and in a conversation with Photochix we both knew we had recieved comments from someone in Hawaii that was negative. In all the confusion I made a mistake as to who made the comment.

The person who was very offensive was from the west coast of the US, not Hawaii. I already learned from my mistake and I am not going to pinpoint exactly where on the west coast, I will let it be said that the comment that was made to me was nasty enough that before I ever commented here I had sent an email off privately on the matter asking them why they would ever say what they did, to which I recieved an even nastier and ruder reply than the comment I had recieved.

Again Cub I am sorry for my mistake your comment to me wasn't the offensive one, it just got mixed up with the one that was.
01/21/2003 08:26:16 AM · #48
PHOTOCHIX ... why not try to be less picky about that comment that was no offensive or cruel or anything ?
Start to comment pictures.
And accept comment from the others.
And as well it's 'etiquette' not to discuss a picture currently being voted on the week people are voting.

Enjoy, take picture, but if you're not ready for comments of anykiind .. do not submit them to the comminity. You can still comment though on ours ;-)
