Yeah I heard about this a few min ago. There is very little info trickling out of there...Lets hope it wasnt terrorist and let be actually just a man made accident. (pipe explosion, transformer blowing up, etc.)

2 explosions that close together make it unlikely to be anything but intentional. The fact that it is Patriot's day in Massachusetts, as well as the day federal taxes are due, widens the pool of likely terrorist groups beyond the usual suspects.

Amazing photo at the end of this list of videos.

ETA: NSFW, and one photo is nothing short of gruesome. The final photo of the actual moment of the explosion is worth seeing - it's amazing that we have so many cameras going at these events now that a micro-second event was captured.

Saw a report that this happened near the VIP section where they were honoring Newtown families.

Don't worry, soon I'm sure our brave senators and congressmen will step forward with new laws to protect us from terrorist attacks.

JFK Library?

Ahhh.... ETA: "Explosion" At JFK Library Was Unrelated Fire: Report

From the Dorchester Reporter:

"The director of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum says that a 3 p.m. fire inside the building's mechanical room was not caused by a device and is apparently not related to the explosions at the Boston Marathon finish line.

Tom Putnam, the director of the JFK Library, said that the incident was confined to a mechanical room near the archive section of the library

I am often contracted by the official photography company for this race, MarathonFoto. I asked for this assignment but they already had enough locals.

I was worried that people I know and have worked with might have been hurt because we often have over 70 photogs at these races with about 25 or so at the finish line. I called the company and they said that all of our photographers are okay and heading back to the hotel.

I hope the best for every one who was affected by this.

Here's the event from the finish line, Boston.com's Steve Silvia - raw video.

It's not terribly graphic, but it is extremely disturbing.

Geeze, just up the road. People are in a turmoil here, natch :-(

My wife, son and I very nearly went to Copley today (actually, many times throughout the day) to take in the action, but decided instead to avoid the crowds and stay and watch a bit further out from the finish (about two miles).

On our walk home we stopped to pick up a pizza and as we waited we saw the breaking news. Shortly afterward every street turned into a chain of emergency vehicles and it seemed as though the emergency response services of the entire state poured in at once, and the sirens are still blaring.

We're new to the city and haven't found our place in the community, but we're as shocked and sunk in despair as if we've lived here our whole lives. It was a beautiful day, and the electricity and energy of the participants and spectators was tremendous. Enormous international presence, tons of university students, charity groups; it was wonderful, and after a long winter and much doubt regarding our move here, we were suddenly excited and optimistic. The people on the streets are devastated now, and it's just a very, very sad day.

Lives lost, horrendous injuries. So pointless and disgusting.

That's at the JFK Library, South and East of downtown Boston. It does not seem to be related, at this point, but who the heck knows?

Looking at some images of the injured, it seems this must have been a bag-bomb, or garbage-can bomb.

Almost all of the injuries appear to be at below waist level, indicating a device that was placed on the ground.

This almost certainly wasn't a suicide bomber, not that that helps to narrow down the list much.

I heard it was a trash can. So many stories swirling around though, you don't know what to believe. I heard a 3 year old was sitting right next to it (hoping that isn't true).

edit: Just saw it was an 8 year old, not 3, and the child is one of the dead.
