Entry (which was DQ'd for date - I had too many photos open at once when processing and inadvertently forgot this one was not for the Duotones challenge):

From comments in the side challenge, I don't think the outtake would have scored well, but it could hardly have done worse. This is my lowest percentile ever (14%) and close to my lowest raw score (4.98x). And I actually thought it was pretty good when I entered it. Oh well, I learned about converting to duotones in CS5 and since I'm not very good with CS5, every new thing I learn comes in handy later. I would love to know where I went wrong - too bright?

If 14% is your lowest so far, you need to work harder. Just this year alone (and I've been here since flush toilets were invented) I have a 7% (in Best of 2012, no less!) and an 11% (in a Free Study, no less!) so you have some work to do! I prefer your entry, by the way.

Outtake

My original entry came in at a moderate percentile (30%). One of the things I didn't pay attention to until after the voting started, was that when I exported the image at 800 pixels on the long side, I lost of good bit of detail in the vignette areas that I had in the image before it was reduced. I suspect that may have negatively influenced the voting.

Looking back, the outtake may have been the better choice, but I have a penchant for dark and moody images.

I've entered 12 challenges since joining in February of this year. One of the things I find most perplexing is that I've received 1's or 2's on each of my entries and not one comment explaining why, yet most have ended as 4.9 to 5.3 in the voting.
