The one way to know what something is, for many, is to know what it isn't. This week, your entry should capture the feeling of "artlessness."

Challenges should be not just about what f-stop setting to capture navel lint, they should challenge the photogs brain, as well, no?

No, the idea is interesting.... how to show art when it's not..... or is it the other way around?

Sounds like most of the entries here every week.

interesting concept but how do the voters handle this? they will still pick the prettiest picture.

that would be pretty artless, I'd say.

Lot of overlap, conceptually, with the mundane/wabi sabi challenge? I'm all for it though, I like "artless". Some of the very best art DPC produces is utterly artless...

The ability to photograph something artless is inherently dependent on knowing what art is in the first place. I think we've already established in numerous threads that our collective notion of art is somewhat subjective and varies considerably.

Therefore, would it not stand that each person will have a unique idea of what constitutes "artless" making voting a nigh-impossible task?

EDIT: spell-check.

I should have prefaced the whole thing by saying it derives from this style thread

and becoming a "better" photographer is a personal journey, a personal and relative standard, and one must ask herself "what is my artless" to shoot for this challenge, and then, based upon comments and votes, learn much about herself and others alike...

We've been Artless for a few months now, haven't we? What's up with that, anyway?
04/03/2013 02:15:46 PM · #14
doesn't one need a style to be artless?

I think that's off-track. "Artless" in the sense that it's being used here means "without artifice". In DPC, bvy is a prime example of photographic artlessness, and so is whiterook. If you remove anything and everything that might stand between the viewer and the thing being photographed, that's on-target as far as "artlessness" goes.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, I'M about as far from "artless" (in this sense) as you can get; I manipulate everything, often past the point of diminishing returns, so my work is consciously "artful", the opposite of "artless".

For all of that, bvy is a FAR better "artist" than I am. See?

I'm also lost.
Is it a pretty picture of something ugly?

No. It's more like the difference between bling and no-bling, say. Artlessness is understated, it doesn't draw attention to itself, it doesn't try to put itself between the viewer and the experience of viewing and say "Hey, look at me! Look at me!"

Think of something like the Versailles Palace in France; totally over-the-top, CRAMMED with conscious artifice. Compare it with an old, post-and-beam barn in Pennsylvania Dutch country, all workmanlike joinery and classic proportions, utterly without artifice, perfectly suited to its task.

If that is the intended definition for this challenge, then I can understand that and appreciate it more than my original preconceived notion of the word.

I guess some things are just hard to explain. I'm thinking of something that would never be hung on a wall than you say "old, post-and-beam barn in Pennsylvania Dutch country" google gave me over 5 million barn paintings.
I'm thinking like a pattern less pattern or an organised kaos type of image. Flames and sparks for instance?
Is that close?
04/03/2013 02:58:49 PM · #22
that what i thought of too, but then i realized it the same type of images we all see in every challenge. the kind submited without caring how they are received.
04/03/2013 03:34:09 PM · #23
Well, the challenge definition doesn't specify whether to photograph an object you consider "artless", or to do the photography "artlessly". World of difference between those two :-)

DPC is artless these days...where is that guy?
04/03/2013 04:30:03 PM · #25
Sounds like a nice letting down of hair experience, I'd be in.
