It would be interesting to plot this against the number and type of challenges. Since we have different quantities of challenges each year, and advanced and expert score higher in general than basic and minimal, this is nearly worthless without that context.

Lots of great work in this challenge (and also in the minimal challenge as well!) - a lot of people brought their best to the table.

Stats: You have rated 113 of 118 images (96%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 5 images (4%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 5.9823.

especially when you consider how many expert editing challenges we have now compared to a year or two ago. The expert challenges seem to be about the only ones getting over a 7 these days. Take those out and the numbers would drop drastically.

I just got a anonymous comment :

Love this... Just beautiful.

makes my piddly score of 5.17 more enjoyable!

Oh, I got to as low as 4.82 before I went to bed, woke up to 5.05 this morning, 3 nice comments, I know where I went wrong, well according to you experts, I still think mine is beautiful despite all the 3's and 4's!

Judging by the trend should be in the high 5's by the time it's over, I've jumped a whole full point in "everyday beauty" from it's lowest point!

Probably one of the highest quality sets of images I have ever had the pleasure of voting on here at DPC. It's clear lots of you pulled out all the stops for this one, amazing job!

Still sub 5. Is it really that bad? I should just give up already and limit myself to facebook.

I am not a portrait photog but I could try to work it out. PM me if you'd like an opinion. I have no entry in this challenge.

wtf....this morning I logged on approx 3am as I had insomnia...and there was a fantastic comment from a site member whom I respect tremendously and I was very honoured by it.

However since then not only has that comment completely vanished. So I am somewhat flummoxed as to what happened to it. No edited comment left either which further compounds the mystery.

But now I have a comment from a baghead who apparently thinks I should have done selective desat on about 75% of my image.

Trust me when I tell you this, Mr/Ms Baghead: your suggestions on selective desat points me towards believing that you may think it an honour to appear on the front page of YANAP. Good for you if that is your dream and aspiration, but trust me, I am NOT a fauxtographer.

End of rant.

I don't comment as a baghead nor have I left any comments on this challenge yet. But I must say that this is the kind of reaction that makes me loathe to do so - or at least to leave comments that I might feel are more meaningful than "pretty picture".

its an opinion, some people still like topaz too.

Look I agree with you both to an extent.

nam, please don't limit yourself to *pretty picture* comments. Criticism is fine, but if you go the other way with *this sucks* just as little is accomplished. Again imnsho, a good critical comment should be balanced and knowledgeable.

mike_311...true, but that doesn't mean I have to like it!!

FWIW I enjoy a good b/w portrait and good colour portraits...but to blend the two together especially in relation to portraits ie leaving some areas of the subject desat and the rest in colour - generally results in a whole lot of ugly.

And yes this kind of selective desat in portraits is HUGE with fauxtogs. Check out YANAP any day and see for yourself.

i agree with you but its a hole people fall into just like hdr and overcooking. we all fall into holes.

done well selective desat, hdr and overcooking can look good, but you have to know what you are doing, its real easy to go overboard and too often.

Exactly. And Frankensteining together colour and desat esp in something as intimate as a portrait is simply a fauxtog trademark. As is overblown saturation, PS'ing out wrinkles on people from age 1-90 til they look like wax figurines...I could go on but have to get up early for work.

However just for fun once this challenge has ended, I will do the pp the baghead suggested, and you can see then how it will completely ruin the image.

Commenting on comments, especially when they are specific enough for the commenter to now recognize you, is pretty much frowned upon if not against the rules.

Also, as we all know, it's not a good idea because it discourages comments. If you don't agree with a comment, you can chalk it up to personal opinion, or you can discuss it with the person later.

I've read the comment and they were trying to be constructive...you may disagree, but what's the purpose of calling it out here?

You're right, Neil, I shouldn't have called them out. But that comment was just aggravating enough at the time to set me off, which has been known to happen before.

My apologies to SC and the DPC community.
