FYI,
There are more types of "stem cells" than embryonic stem cells. Even "embryonic" stem cells come in two flavors - blastocyte stem cells ( also called totipotent stem cells because they can differentiate into ANY other type of cell ), and post-blastocyte stem cells ( also called pluripotent stem cells because they can differentiate into MOST other types of cells ( e.g. they cannot differentiate into placental cells ). Then there are the multipotent stem cells such as are found in bone-marrow, which can differentiate only into a particular type of cell ( like one of several types of blood cells, for example ). Then, finally, there are terminally-differentiated stem cells - still stem cells, but those that can only become a specific kind of cell. Terminally-differentiated stem cells are found in virtually every organ in the body. TD nerual cells, for example, are found in the brain.
The "problems" with embryonic stem cells are many
1) Although they contain an entire genetic structure, and will usually develop into the right KIND of cell, it is impossible to determine in advance which genetic markers get activated. As a very simple example - embryonic stem cells inserted into a blue-eyed person's iris might develop into brown iris cells instead of blue.
2) Since the genetic make-up of embryonic stem cells is not the same as the recipient's, rejection can occur
3) In a great many cases, embryonic stem cells have differentiated into non-anticipated clusters - called self-differentiation. This has resulted in benign ( so far ) tumors ( called teratomas ).
4) Then there are the moral implications, which many try to ignore as irrelevant.
A second point is that many people believe the continued lie that the Bush administration has banned stem cell research. That is an outright lie. Bush's executive order doesn't ban ANY kind of stem cell research - not even embryonic stem cell research. All it does is stop federal FUNDING of embryonic stem cell research that relies on the use of NEW embryos. Federal funding is still available for embryonic stem cell research based on embryonic stem cells harvested prior to the executive order - and there are millions of them available for use.
Just some facts that you should know.

To the point I made above, the new jaw was "grown" using adult stem cells obtained from the man's own bone-marrow - not embryonic stem cells.
The feat was a very positive development and one that is sure to be repeated - and not only for growing new bones, although bones do represent a different type of tissue than, say, lungs or kidneys which have more complex structures. But in time, who knows.

Intended or not, it is one of the political issues that differentiate the Bush and Kerry platforms. The Democratic National Convention made quite a to-do about having Ronald Reagan Jr. speaking to their delagates about stem cell research that could someday "cure" the disease that affected the former President ( Alzheimers ). This plea was contasted with the so-called Bush ban on stem cell research, which, as I pointed out is NOT a ban at all.
Kerry has stated that he will reverse the executive order issued by Bush that bans the use of federal money for embryonic stem cell research based on the use of NEW embryonic tissue.
I believe that that is why it is considered political, and hence a rant topic. |

As far as I can tell, the moral implications are that abortion is still legal. Existing levels could support many new stem cell lines.
If, as has been suggested by many opposed to stem cell research, women would start getting pregnant and having abortions to supply stem cells for pay, most people (including supporters of abortion rights) would be disgusted by that activity.

You are correct that Bush did not outlaw stem cell research, but he did put a large clamp on it. There are millions of stem cells, but they only exist within 64 lines, not enough for serious scientific research (which requires controls and comparisons for the most efficient study). That also limits the sources and allows owners to pick and choose and charge more for access to these lines. Opening it up to newly discovered lines means more research can be done for less cost.
