Do you give a 10 to your favorite in each challenge? And go down from there? Or do you rate each photograph independently, regardless of the quality of the other photos in the challenge?

I've only voted a handful of times compared to many of you, so I'm interested to hear how others dole out the scores. Thanks!

I think so long as you're consistent in your own voting it doesn't matter. How I vote though, since you asked, is generally; 5 for a photo I couldn't describe as 'bad', but I don't think is good either. 6 I tend to give to photos I like but don't intend to come back to. 7 to 9 are all the photos I consider very good and these each challenge I tend to vote relative to one another. 2 to 4 are all images I consider very poor, often with large technical flaws or not following the brief, as well as not being a good image. I also tend to knock 1 or 2 points off for major lack of originality, basic technical errors or not following the challenge description.

If I have time I will often also go back once I've voted on all images to make the odd +/- 1 point adjustments on images relative to the competition.

1's and 10's I do give out but it's very rare, most challenges my scores range from 3 to 8/9.

I go thru and look at every photo... then I group them into top, middle and lower ... I give 10's to the photos that I think are done to perfection, back thru and 9's to just below those, and on and on... I am not a speed voter. It will take me a couple of days to vote an entire challenge, I think everyone deserves a good look. I've seen shots that I passed on and when I came back to them they had much much more merritt than I thought the first time. Sometimes my Favorite isn't a 10 Everyone one is partial to one "style" or subject etc... so my fav may only be an 8... I've learned by looking and analyzing those photos that maybe don't appeal to me I see techinques that are done to perfection... It's taught me a LOT by voteing this way...

Pretty much exactly as HawkinsT does it.

For this week only:

10 for the best 3, 8 for good or great photos, 3 for not very good or bad photos.

Too many 5s on here for my liking.

Cool strategy. Might try this myself.

I take my pants off first, get's me in the mood to be generous.

I give half the images a 5, and the other half a 6.

Unless they're especially good or bad, then I vote higher or lower.

Usually I give one or two 10's on every challenge. Choosing the 10's is easy.

On the downside, images that are awful but basically meet the challenge get a 3, and images that are awful and basically don't meet the challenge get a 2. I reserve 1's for images that are so impenetrable that I can't tell if they meet the challenge of not.

Edit... As far as method, my method is very similar to HawkinsT. On the first pass, I only use 1-7. Then I go through the 7's and bin them into the 7-10 range. Then if my average for the challenge is less that 5.5, I go through and make some adjustments upwards.

I have to admit , I give everybody - 1 - just for showing up.

Don't consult others. Vote how you want.Is the photo good? Is the photo bad? Use the appropriate score and stand behind it. Your voting is your voting, your opinion, and only you can define it. We all have our own methods, and they're all wrong for you. Choose your own. Be proud of it. Vote whatever you want a 1 and a 10, everything else be damned. Just be fair and equal and you've nothing to ever worry about.

ETA: And if people call you a troll I'll defend you in the forums :) Just be fair.

This is the only important consideration -- vote consistently on all the photos within a given challenge.

If you browse the forums a bit, you'll find literally hundreds of previous threads on this very subject, and at least as many voting methods ...

to make sure i vote on every photo, i start by going through and giving every image a 1.

then, when i have time, i go through and find the one's i really, really like, and i give them 5.

usually, though, i don't have time to make the second pass.
03/01/2013 05:18:30 PM · #13
I give the good ones a 1 because they're showing off.

I give the crappy ones like mine a 1 because they're a threat.

I give the really crappy ones that aren't a threat to mine a 10 to encourage them to continue to not be a threat to my crap.

i forgot to mention, when i'm going through to change my votes, because i don't have much time, i only look at the thumbnails...that's a lot quicker.

You look? I glue anchovies to my keyboard and let the cat do the rest.

i used to do that, but now my cats have their own accounts and they won't let me watch how they vote.

OK, how about ...

"I vote every picture a "5" because that's the only number on my keypad which doesn't just make the cursor jump around."

Did I mention that the SC tolerance for old-timers taking advantage of a newbie's naïveté hit zero about three years ago? ;-)

I vote on a curve, top photo gets a 10, top 3 get 9's, front page 8's, I never vote a 5, I have to go 6 or 4, harder than it looks, my worst is a 4, it has to be intentionally bad to get a lower score than a 4. I do vote every challenge, for the last 2 years anyway, 100%. I normally vote during my 5 hour dialysis session.

I base each picture on their own merits. I might give out only one 10 or I could give out 10. Just depends on if I like the shot or not. Rarely do I give out 1's, 2's or 3's. They'd have to be pretty bad or totally missing the challenge theme.

baby with the bath water ;-)

another voting technique is to give the first photo that pops up a 10, the next two get 9s, the next three get 8s, all the way down until the remainder get ones (you'll actually give out 45 votes before you become a complete troll...)
