I know that type of person! It's called a jackass!

The Hindus have a saying "Work is worship." But this guy, despite not even being Hindu, took it to an extreme. For awhile he was calling late in the evening nearly every weekend. Then when he realized that I wasn't answering my phone, he started calling my employees instead. I had to tell them that it was okay for them to not answer their phones when he called.

I didn't last long at that company after that. When they tried to hire me back a year later, the one condition I had was that I wouldn't work for him.

There are two types of people who work......ones who work to live, and ones who live to work.

Those of the live to work also have this weird thing where they think that because they live to work that if you work for them, you'll do the same.

I actually feel a little sad for them. I love what I do, and have been fortunate with that throughout my life, but you *need* down time, and to appreciate the world around you.

And this is reason #4 why I'm so damned glad I was just layed off. Feels almost like I can breathe now.

I won't get into it about Valentine's Day specifically, but....sometimes people just need a day that's special. It's human nature.

The worst boss I ever had was a Jehovah's Witness, because he would do things like calling me at 10:30 pm on Christmas Eve with a work question that could easily wait until the 26th. It was annoying as hell. I quickly learned to turn my work phone off when I left for a holiday, and not even think of listening to messages until 8:30 on the morning I returned.

I'm guessing this has a lot more to do with his personality than it does his religion.....

Probably true.... But when you're a member of a rare religion, what you do and say reflects on your religion. To this day, ten years later, this guy holds the record as the biggest ass I've ever worked with, and the only Jehovah's Witness I've ever knowingly met, other than the people who've come to my door at 7:30 on Saturday mornings. His lack of respect for other people and their lives is everything I know about that religion.

Sounds like even more of a reason not to group 8 million people together under his behavior. Every group of people has someone you hope people don't take as being representative of them as a whole. Maybe the next time Witnesses come to your door at 9:30 (we universally don't even meet to go out until 9) you can find out more about what kind people we are.

By they way, I don't suppose you saw the original post where I begged people not to turn this into a religious debate?

I thought it was a bit odd that you started the whole thread by saying you were a JW and then begged people not to talk about religion. Anyway, i think everyone pretty much agrees with you. Unless we have some florists on DPC i guess.

LOL, well I just knew there were some on here that knew my religion and would ask me why I cared so I just wanted to get that out there at the start.

I can't say i know many females who are suckers for that sort of valentines day commericialisation. Most of my female friends and family think it's bollocks.

no you misinterpreted, i meant they are suckers for it. Exactly the reason Steak and BJ day hasn't caught on as a national holiday...

Seems odd that you'd bring up some fairly unusual idea that comes from your religion in the rant forum, then say, "oh, but don't talk about my religion." But okay, topic dropped.

Honestly, you have to go with what you know. I certainly didn't know there were that many JWs.....I would have agreed with Ann's assessment that it was a rare religion.

Good on you that your home base group doesn't go out before 9:00, but it's been my experience that they bang on doors early. Part of the reason I moved up on the side of a mountain off a minimally traveled road is that I didn't want bothered. The house I bought was vacant for over a year, yet there they were, a pair of JWs, within about a month after I moved in. And it was fairly early on a weekend morning, the time I have the least amount of interest in somebody intruding on my time. I don't much like someone bringing their beliefs to my doorstep, but maybe that's just me.

On a similar note......I lived in the city for about six years before I moved back out into the country. The neighborhood where I lived was about as diverse as it gets......old & young white folks, old & young black folks, college kids, mixed marriages of all sorts, and we were all awakened every Sunday morning promptly at 7:00 A.M. by the bells at St. Mary's Catholic/Croation church. There were terrific folks and there were idiots. But it was nice to see that both the goodness and the idiocy transcended all the other barriers. The origins of the angels and the deadbeats were the same mix as the regular folks. Nobody gave a rat's ass about the color of your skin, who you worshiped, where you went to school or work, who you voted for......it was a terrific place to live *because* it was so diverse with no clear majority. It was a true ethnic melting pot. I had more of an exposure to real authentic home style international cooking there than any place else I've ever been.

Here's where it gets weird.......I moved out into a seriously rural area after living in that neighborhood, and into what I amusedly call "Ford Country" where manly men, chainsaws, pickup trucks, deer rifles, and tractors were the most common things you saw. I had an automotive repair shop for seventeen years. I had two black customers the entire seventeen years I had the shop. Both of them created huge problems, one stiffed me for a bill for almost a year, the other one tried to say that I ripped him off and stole a bunch of stuff off his car, including taking his engine out and substituting an junk engine! The first guy did eventually pay his bill, and the state police investigated me and discovered that not only was the other guy a liar, he was too stupid to realize that the engine in his car was the one it rolled out of the factory with still installed.

Had I not had the experience I did living in that wonderful neighborhood that I did, what sort of impression would a white business owner out in the country be likely to have given these circumstances?

So, yeah......I'm prejudiced as Hell.......I hate deadbeats and assholes. But I've been around the block enough to know that those characteristics transcend all ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
