I started having an intermittent malfunction when using my Canon 24-105mm with my 5D Mark ii. It wouldn't actuate at times and the error message said that the contacts on the lens were dirty. So I cleaned them several times. It would work for awhile and poop out again. I finally took it in to Camera Clinic today. Apparently this is a common problem in well used zooms. There is a flexible wire harness that moves as the zoom is actuated. The connection has finally worn out. That harness is attached to some other electronics that will have to be replaced as well. The part is about $50. But with labor it will be about a $300 bill. That's still much better than buying a new lens for over a grand.
Anybody else had an issue like this?

only with the 17-85 efs, thats a fixed price repair of £70 as its a very!(read manufacturing/design error) common fault,

sorry for not related to 24-105 but I had issue with EF-S 17-85 and had it fixed at Canon in NJ. Now it is working fine.

Had this exact problem with my 24-105. Just got it back from the Camera Clinic today. $385 to replace this:

Well, Art, look on the bright side... you've now got yourself one nifty $385 magnifier, and a potential Whatsit to boot!

I thought about that after I posted it. ;-)

NOTE: I was told that the problem was that the flex cable wore out, which happens from zooming in & out a lot. I did not use this lens that much, BUT the zoom was loose since I got it - I tried to tighten it up, but was unable. I'm convinced that the constant flopping out of the zoom was what did it, so - a warning to others - beware the floppy zoom.

I've been meaning to do that myself, this thread just reminded me. And it was very easy.
