Well shucks, thanks guys! I don’t think I’ve ever entered a shot that I thought might or should ribbon. I just hope to be pleasantly surprised one day. This shot though is not ribbon worthy and the last few voters agree with it now sitting at 6.2. I’m still happy with how it’s been received though.

Phil

You deserve a ribbon just for your humble attitude, seriously ;------------)

So, to the people who are calling out the horse entries: Are you marking them down because it was a logical and popular choice for meeting the challenge? I've seen police on horses in NYC. Seems like a Horse could have been an option for you city dwellers, too.

I'm 5.14 right now on this one and it's a weaker image than my entry into Searching which is at 4.7ish...

I didn't mean anything by it I just didn't realize how many horse people we have here.

I was in Oklahoma and took a few horse shots and I saw a horse that was very big and stocky.
It looked like a very big mule. Anyone know what it's called?
I'll try to post a pic.

Only about 60 police horses left in NYC.
You probably have a better chance of getting a Condor shot in Estes park.

????All I see is that someone noted that there are a lot of entries with horses in them. Don't see it as calling out. Also, fwiw, my voting doesn't change either way just because the subject's a horse or horses.

@ nygold...sounds like heavies aka draught horses to me. And they don't necessarily have the hair on the lower legs (us horse people call 'em feathers). Some people trim the feathers pr cut them off all together. Fer example, this mare here, Brio, was 1/2 Clyde and 1/2 TB. Her owner liked her feathers trimmed. Fifi's owner, however, didn't trim her feathers, and Fifi is pure Clydesdale.

Thanks for the info snaffles. It looked like the first horse you showed and was almost a head taller than the regular sized horses.
I couldn't get over how huge it was, a true mix of power and beauty.

Yep, heavies are called that for a reason! The one you saw was probably a similar cross to Brio, the idea that you get a horse with the substance and calm nature of a heavy but with agility and speed thrown in from the Thorooughbred parent. Brio sure as hell could flatten out and gallop full speed when asked.

They were bred for sheer power. They had to be huge and strong enough to carry a knight clad not only in his own armour, but their own armour too. And when there was peace, they pulled plows and drays and every other manner of vehicles. They were everything from the tractor to the tank of their age. If you look back to a folder in my port labelled 2009 Challenges, you can see an image titled Best friends reliving the age of horse as war machine.

Even now I describe Fifi, the 2nd horse, as being the size of a Lincoln Navigator. She stands 17 hh (aka 5foot 8 inches at the shoulder - there are 4 inches to a hand) and weighs 1800 lbs. Brio, the first horse, stood about as high as Fifi but weighed only around 1400-1500 lbs as she was more lightly built, being half TB.
