A couple a days ago, I posted a question about color managment on LCD monitors because I was considering getting an iMac for photographic purposes. Based on the response, plus what my photo club said, plus what even the mac salespeople said, I have decided to switch to a G4 tower with a CRT monitor.

I keep reading though that the fan noise on these machines are pretty load, louder than usual... Didn't sound loud at the store, but store's are noisy enough perhaps? Is there anyone who can tell me if they are really much louder than an average computer fan?

Hey sylandrix -- I don't have a G4 tower, but follow the various Apple technical issues closely. Check out this information from the Macintouch website -- sounds like the problem is addressed with a firmware update.

I will run the firmware patch as soon as I get my computer, and I hope I don't notice any further problems.

It seems perhaps it bothers people who've owned previous macs which have operated on quieter noise levels... the g4 being my first mac, I won't have that bias :)

Thanks for your help!,

Holy crap, I thought you were going to tell me Canon came out with a Powershot G4 ... 10x zoom, 6 megapixels, ultra fast autofocus. Phewph! Thank good.

The ageless debate:) A couple of years back I wouldn't either. Lately, my gaming has dropped drastically, I could even say its nonexistant. I find all I use my computer for nowadays is surfing, photography, and graphic design. I don't know about surfing, but I think macs still excel at doing the latter tasks. Color profiling is much less of headache than it is on PCs, for one.

Although Macs may crash as often as PCs, I will be relieved never to have to reinstall the operating system every six months because the operating system is acting kooky and the registry is a mess.

Conclusion - I have much less free time on my hands than I used to, and I think a Mac will increase my productivity when it comes to graphic work.

I still have some time before I walk in and make a purchase, if anyone finds my reasons are flawed in deciding to go with a mac, I welcome your comments/opinions...

Let me just state that I use to be a die hard MAC guy back in my graphic design days.

Why MAC sucks.

Okay first off, the cost of the machine. No one can sit there and tell me the $5,ooo.oo they paid for thier top of the line MAC system can do 10x or even 1x more for that matter than my $1,600.00 966 mhz PC can do. (which is considered average not top of the line).

As I professional web designer I would put any cutsie putsie MAC against my beige PC when surfing FLASH sites or the web for that matter.
You'll notice the PC out perfoms everytime. Trust me on this one. First hand experience.

Also as a web designer, 98% of all sites are designed to work on a Windows based OS first then MABEY tested on a MAC.

As a Multimedia programmer there are countless issues when using a MAC. They range from "that's weird" to "Crap it does'nt work on MAC!!!!" yet it's flawless on a PC.

Apple should be sued for those stupid commercials they released. Mac's don't crash......please, someone tell that to my old MAC. Who, when crashed in Photoshop, the whole system crashed. PC if PS crashes, ONLY PS crashes not the OS. You MAC people know what I'm talking about.

Any way this is getting to long....and I really could'nt care less

The reasons for having a MAC.
-Your a Graphic Designer. It's an industry standard....that's fine.
if not.........
-You need a computer to match your decor. (on this point I do have to give props to Apple, they do a great Job on design)
-You need a cute computer to check your email. Cause that's as advanced as you'd like to get.
-You never want to upgrade a computer, you'll be happy buying the new iMac next year.

Need a decor item get a MAC. Need computing power, get a PC.

I have been using a mac for the last 3 yeras now, gotta tell you it just works. I HAVE NOT HAD A CRASH OF ANY KIND IN OVER A YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have been using OS X for about 2 years now, and have to say the UNIX based platform is very stalbe. Gotta say I love my new laptop too, haven't found another that is as powerful, oh yeah and it will fit in my camera bag.

Fibre Optix is obviously not talking about Mac OS X in his rant above. Mac OS X is very stable, and a fantastic web development environment. I run Apache web server, mySQL, PHP, and Perl on my iBook portable. It's been great for building database driven websites and I can run Photoshop, Dreamweaver, and other applications along with the Unix-based tools. Not bad for a $1000 laptop with 4-5 hour battery life.

I assure you that when Windows crashes in Photoshop (or Quark, Illustrator, PageMaker, InDesign, Acrobat, AOL, or anything else...) the OS most assuredly DOES crash, to the point where hitting CTRL-ALT-DEL repeated merely leaves that blue screen with useless programmer's diagnostics laughing in my face...never mind actually trying the "restart" command.
Other advantages of Mac over Windows is you don't have the bewildering array of configurations available, and you are typically immune to 90% of the viruses released. You also get free photo, video, and DVD authoring built-in.

Ah - the old 'we are so obscure and side-lined nobody wants to build alternative hardware (which would bring configuration permuatations) or bother to waste their time writing viruses' benefits.

Only iTrolling :)

Yeah... If you use the crappy versions they've been torturing users who don't know better with (95, 98, ME etc). Get Windows 2000 or XP. I stress them every day by developing buggy software and go months without rebooting. They extremely rarely crash unless there's something wrong with your computer (hardware).

I have a new G4 tower, and I had one previously. It is true that the new one is significantly louder than the old one (the old one was near silent), but the new one is also still not as loud as my PC is.

I've been using Mac for over twenty years now and have never had a problem, other than the rare hardware failure, that I couldn't fix. I can't say that for the PC arena where I've made my living for the past fifteen years.

I have Windows2000 at work now running on a 2.4GHz Compaq, so we'll test its stability soon enough. Luckily, I should be getting an new G4 there soon as well...

I have one of the G3 models that look exactly like the G4s, but different spec and colour. What I did was to take out the fan that was in the computer, and replace it with an ultra-silent fan with a temperature trigger. I also switched the harddisk with a quieter one. (the harddrive is likely to make as much noise as the fan, you know)..

I did this, not because the computer was particularly loud, but because I am using it as one of my two servers, and because they are 1) in my bedroom 2) always on, they can NEVER be quiet enough.

The G3 is now virtually silent. Now if only someone could come up with a way to permanently shut up my Athlon fans, I'd be happy ;) (no, water cooling is not an optioN)

You have obviously never used OS X. (10.2.3 atm)

i know plenty of people that are running g3's and g4's/dual g4's. besides maybe a watercooled PC, i've never heard anything more quiet than a mac. also, if you're looking for great stability to do work on, run win2000. win9x/Me are garbage for anything more than surfing the web/email. don't buy into all the hype about how winXP is so great. they just took win2000 and gave it a cheesy, bloated, memory hoging interface. but with intel and microsoft pushing that paladin, this PC will probably be my last (but this is entirely another issue).

There's always Linux....

no NLE's that could compare to vegas video or for that matter even premiere on linux, that's my only reason of not being on linux already :/

but then again, with a big part of this is going to be hardware based, how safe is linux going to be?
