The Washington Post did a GigaPan of the event, 305 images taken over a 13 minute span, stitched together into one freaking huge image.
If you were there, you might be able to find yourself. |

| It's amazing how many Vietnamese Facebook users have tagged their own names into the crowd in the VIP section. Also, there's a misaligned head-and-shoulders directly behind Joe Biden, which strikes me as odd; you'd think they'd have cleaned up that area better? |

boys, boys, boys...this is a GigaPan, a stitch of 305 images shot over a 13 minute span. i've shot similarly sized (though not quite as detailed) GigaPans and the software has broken the individual images into as many as 27,000 tiles to sort through and stitch together. overall, it is absolutely amazing how well it does, imho.
as for "cleaning it up", yes, it can be done, but it is a royal PITA, especially if you are working on deadline. even on a decent machine, the workflow on a stitch of this size could normally run 2-6 HOURS, just to get it to the point of cleaning it up. it could easily take 3x the processing time just to pixel peep the image to identify the areas that need adjusting.
and really ;-) "street cred" and "photojournalistic piece"? this is just another multimedia presentation to give people access to the magnitude of the event. this was not intended to be considered in the same vein as the photos printed in the paper. |

i know :D
i just thought that was a nice place to plug in some of the technical background behind the magic...
for instance, i recently did one that if printed out it measure 44'x8' at 300dpi! the detail is simply mind-boggling. i'd love to see a side-by-side comparison with what one gets swinging around their iphone ;-)
the reality is that these GigaPans are anything but automatic (thank God). |
