Ha!

You people are totally insane.

I'm so glad.

Welcome, Newbie! You'll love it here (or go insane, but... either way, you'll be happy).

You know that slippy stopped doing that about a year ago. Settle down already!!

Stefan...

Run!!!

Run now while you can!!

They don't let you sleep, eat (well, you can eat at your computer while you're processing), it sucks you in and you end up sticking your children in the river in the middle of winter just to get a shot! Your neighbors will see you lying in the middle of the road, blocking traffic to take a picture of a teddy bear in a mud puddle, or a vulture eating a squirrel. You'll become an outcast in your community, a pariah, the person texts in the middle of the night looking for a live chicken.

In other words -- it's great!

what he failed to say is that the proceeds from selling that photo on stock sites went to the Feed a Homeless Squirrel foundation in his area.
I think that should get him some bonus points ;p

I was looking for a complied thread on established lore for interpretation of the edit modes and can't find anything more specific on "Basic Editing"

Anyone point me in the right direction for such a beast if it exists, and in the mean time I have a short list of is it acceptable to play with XYZ items for the basic challenge 'my left foot'

HSL levels by colour (in lightroom)
B&W conversion by colour (again in lightroom)
Split toning
Colour filters
white balance

Actualy it's going toward SGPS (Sacrificial Goat Protection Society) but let him think its for the squirrels it seems to keep him away from the knife draw.

In basic, the rule is -- as long as you apply it to the whole image. So, for instance, you have a red rose on a bed of green leaves, you can end up with a desaturated photo with everything desaturated but the rose, because you can do this by desaturating the colors one by one. But you haven't physically selected anything on the image itself. But if you have a dozen red roses there's no way you could desaturate all but one without selecting part of the image, so that's forbidden.

So white balance, color filters, etc, as long as it's done to the whole image, they're fine. No gradients, etc.

(as far as I understand it)

with basic, anything that is not cropping or an entire color channel, that selects any specific portion of the image is not allowed (minimal does not even allow cropping!).
Split toning may be a grey area (based around what it's doing) - pun intended.

for a recent basic edit entry i did as much as possible in camera and with the props on hand and did only a B&W via master channel desat. to do what i wanted creatively wouldn't be possible under the ruleset, but would be under advanced because of the selective area, and using a program or plug-in to get the effect would be the same as using a wand/selection tool because it's not selecting the entire image in it's processing, so you're stuck unable to fully achieve an artistic vision for the challenge, so you submit what you can. if you really want to share and get voted on the image with the selective area editing, you can use a different source image (as long as the filename is different as captured by the camera, it can be the same scene a milli-second before or after) and use it for the monthly free study, but keep in mind if you do that you may be penalized by some voters as it's just a "recycled image".

vawendy is mostly correct, with one more limitation: your adjustments must be applied uniformly to the whole image (no selections or masks) and in Normal mode.

Originally posted by Basic Rules:

You May:

• saturate, desaturate or change the colors of your entry, but no selections are allowed.
• use only Adjustment Layers (or their equivalent). An Adjustment Layer is a special type of layer containing no image data that lets you experiment with color and tonal adjustments without permanently modifying the pixels. Adjustment Layers must be applied in Normal mode.

But you can use plugins. Use can use topaz, colorefex, silver efex, etc. You just have to be careful. For instance, no vignettes.

You are??? I just spent a few hours re-creating a color effect "manually" that I liked in Topaz! ..... I suppose I could have just asked and saved myself a lot of time ...:-(.

Thanks all. No gradiant maps/split toning looks to be the safe route.

For clarity-

CROPPING is legal in all editing sets except Minimal. MASKING is legal in Advanced and Expert ONLY.

CHANNELS are legal as they effect the ENTIRE image (unless you mask the adjustment...which I already covered). What you can't do is select specific objects like Wendy said. Be aware that there is OFTEN a go around to get a result through capture that would be illegal in many editing sets, it just takes some thinking about how to accomplish the shot.

A simple and incomplete explanation of Advanced is that you can make selections but cannot change image area. Meaning, you cannot "get rid" of large objects, though cloning small ones is okay, and you can change the colors of existing shapes by selecting them via masks (like a flower), but you can't draw random stuff in the sky by changing the color in only some portions of it. You can combine images to increase DoF or exposure, but this must be the only reason you are combining the images and the scene must not change appreciably between shots. You can have existing artwork in the scene so long as it is obvious that it is artwork and not something else (using a photo for a substitute background, for instance, is illegal, since it fools the user into thinking the photo is the actual scene). This limitation on other works is true of ALL editing sets.

Expert allows pretty much anything so long as you took all of your source photos during the challenge dates (though texture only layers can be from any time frame).

Minimal MUST be a JPEG at capture, you cannot convert the RAW to jpeg, it must be JPEG from camera. No cropping, no nothing. The only "editing" you can do is to resize once and sharpen (and only sharpening that does not have a slider is allowed... no adjusting how much sharpening there is). You may also convert to grayscale, but with zero customization (the option should say "convert to grayscale" or some such and have zero sliders or anything, just automatically perform the action). In camera settings for jpeg can be used (saturation blah blah blah) but these are all prior to capture.

ALWAYS ensure your date is correct on your camera if you are shooting an entry. Diligence is better than having a DQ instead of a ribbon.

That's a brief and incomplete rundown. Importantly, it is lacking examples of specific things that are "on the edge" of the rules. If you are unsure, submit to Site Council for a quick opinion from them. It can take a couple days though, so you have to plan ahead with that. If you don't understand why something is/is not legal, there are tons of examples in the forums that we can usually point you towards.

Welcome to the fray! If you've any questions, feel free to ask.

ETA: accuracy

Just wanted to add that in Minimal editing, you can resize only once, but you're allowed to sharpen multiple times (only sharpening that has no slider adjustments like Derek said.)

Good clarification there- got a bit ahead of myself and put the once after the wrong part of the sentence! :)
