was out hiking up and down dale with the dog today and noticed my lens was creeping as i walked, i have an aftremarket strap (so much better than canons) and an E1 palm grip, so it hangs down by my side lens pointing down it was annoying me

canon want £95 + vat @20% to fix it, took me 2 minutes and with my L lens skills hehe but really easy fix

fix:

Peel back the rubber focusing ring and rotate the ring until three (or four) little screws line-up with the access hole on the ring. Those little screws tighten or loosen little teflon spacers that control the 'barrel creep'. If you tighten them (very, very slightly), you should eliminate your barrel creep. Remember, 'less is more' when adjusting the tension on the barrel.

bit easier than yesterdays deep clean of my 28-70 L had some dust in it had every element out and cleaned them :)

i used to fix $5m servers while they were still running and guitars mid song so just got go slow and figure it out :)

Interesting... I take it that the focus ring is not held down with any adhesive? I wonder if this is the same type of mechanism used on the 24-70... I have never had an issue with creep on mine, but if I did it would be good to have this technique in my back pocket.

the focus rubber rings are never stuck down, well not all my L's just tight fit

I wish I knew someone brave enough to try this. My 18-200 has major barrel creep.

i doubt it will have the same adjusters not being an L. black electric tape can work but think yours is a double extension?

my sigma 50-500 does as well but has a lock to lock it

It locks at 18mm but I don't want to lock it between shots.

I guess I can live with it. Just one of life's minor irritations :)

i've had this freaking barrel creep from the beginning with this lens, i always assumed it was normal as i use a side sling strap. giles you saved my day i'm gonna try this later

ditto! My 24-105 has always been very loose. I will try this when I am slightly moire sobe.r

Thanks for posting this info Giles.
I am now getting around to doing this on my lens. I don't seem to be getting the right result so far. I hope I am correct in thinking I should be tightening these three screw down slightly (clockwise)? I started out doing 1/4 turn on each in gradual steps, then 1/2 turn in steps. I can now only guess that I have given each screw maybe 2 full turns clockwise and the barrel still creeps. I guess I could tighten further but am worried I might damage something or possibly the idea is to loosen to allow some tensioner to engage?

Not sure where to go from here??? Keep tightening further???

Well Giles was kind enough to respond to me in a PM, and apparently his lens creep was fixed with just a half turn of each screw. I can turn all three screws a good ten turns clockwise and still have the lens creep :(
I don't know what more I can do about it but send it in for possible parts replacement, and I'm not sure that would be worth the expense. Oh well.

ETA: Just called a local repair shop to see what insight they may have into fixing my barrel creep. Possible options were new guide rails or maybe heavier viscosity lubricant. Either would involve the standard break down fee for this lens- $200.
I think I will either live with it or maybe try my luck using Canon Pro Services to take care of it at a discounted rate.

Thanks Frank! I did just check with Doug. He also suggested a break down and installation of thicker grease ($250). He also said some people get a round rubber belt used in vacuum cleaners to roll in place and hold the zoom in position. I can see this working to hold it zoom with the barrel extended to 105mm, but not holding it zoomed out with the barrel not extended. Maybe a flat rubber band could be placed over the gap to cover both the moving and stationary portion of the lens? I'll have to experiment with that...
