I just heard there will be a Transit of Mercury on Monday, starting about 7am EDT. I'm not sure my camera has enough magnification to see it, though I was able to see the Transit of Venus a while ago. Also, it sounds like it will last way too long to do a time-lapse ... :-(

Yep. It's looking like I might have a window of opportunity here. It is supposed to be partly sunny, so I may have to contend with some clouds. I'm going to be prepared and see what I can capture.

I may set up a telescope and see if I can get at least a few pics of the event during the day if the cloud situation here is ok.
Even with filters, shooting directly into the sun, camera shake shouldn't be a problem.
It might be a good idea to experiment with shooting the sun over the weekend to see if you can get the sunspots to show in the images. If not, then shooting the transit would likely be a futile endeavor.
My thoughts were to use a 4" f11 telescope and one or two 5" square welding hood lenses in an adapter similar to a Cokin filter holder or maybe just some good tape.
Here is a boring one minute video clip of Aldebaran emerging from behind the Moon last month.

For the Venus transit I used a piece of film from the print shop (the kind (formerly) used to make offset printing plates) as a filter.

Just back from a road trip. Managed to get one or two good snaps with a sense of wonder.

Stacked with the 3 shots I had. It is a tad sharper but I found much richer colors! Thanks for the suggestion GeneralE.

Today is the 50th anniversary of the first photos taken by Lunar Orbiter 1 -- which five days later took the first "earthrise" photo ...

Scientists wanted Lunar Orbiter to take its pictures on film, which provided sharper images than TV cameras. But there was no way to get the film back to Earth. So engineers devised an ingenious system. The camera took a couple of hundred pictures on 70-millimeter film. When the film reached the end of its roll, it was developed inside an on-board laboratory. It was then scanned, and the images were transmitted to Earth.

On Sunday, February 26th, the moon will pass in front of the sun, transforming rays of sunlight across parts of South America, southern Africa and Antarctica into fat crescents and thin rings of light.

"Ring of Fire" -- the Lunar eclipse from space

The total eclipse of the sun on August 21, 2017 will be just north of my location. I may have to travel 150 miles north into Wyoming, or 250 miles east into Nebraska to see the totality. I don't want to miss this total solar eclipse. Canon will be presenting an educational series on photographing the event. I'll post them here, when available.

Planning a road trip west for the 2017 eclipse. Not as yet sure what the destination will be but could be as far west as Oregon.

I'm a little southeast of you in Castle Rock, CO. I've had this eclipse mentally bookmarked since 1979 when I was in Washington State and it was too cloudy to see!
Was thinking of going to Casper until I found out the Astronomical League is having their annual convention there to coincide with the eclipse, everything has been sold out for nearly a year...I think my best shot is going to some little speck of a town in eastern WY or western NE and hoping for the best.

I'm guessing that pretty much any lodging along the path of totality is going to be impossible to book... so I'm not trying. I'm planning on sleeping in my car the night before.
