hahahaaa this was taken on 10-9-13
That would make sense of this being a meteor than a comet by far...
of course I can never tell satellites from wishing stars.... thank you for clarifying that

was it moving slowly, was it very fast or sudden, or did it stay still in the sky? |

Approximately:
0-4 seconds = meteor/"fireball"
seconds - <5 minutes = satellite/space station/plane
(apparently) stationary with tail = comet |

I never counted the time, but it went as fast as a baseball pitch... its the best I could describe the speed |

At 1/1000 shutter speed, and the other camera settings, a meteor is probably the only thing that would be that bright, except possibly the flare from a satellite's solar cell panels.
Heavens-Above is a good site to see what's coming to your neighborhood of the sky. Cgino alerted me to it.
This is a good link too, if you want a simplified way to know where and when to look for ISS flyovers. Spotthestation/ NASA

Here is an interesting one to watch in the coming days! The ESA's Rosetta probe is approaching its target, comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. We're already getting an idea what a strange object this is. The probe will rendezvous with the comet nucleus in 9 days. Later this year, it will deploy a probe to actually land on the comet nucleus. |

Oh yeah! I will be in the lower Fl Keys, but will be pretty busy as it's the sport lobster season Wed & Thurs. Ja9 will be camping in the same area this week too.
I will be taking a 4" Meade ETX scope to view Saturn and maybe Jupiter as well. It's pretty dark sky country down there between Marathon and Key West. The ISS is coming over a few times during my stay as well. |

Just came across this tutorial on correcting/transforming images taken from the ISS -- color- and perspective-correction. Links to movie/demo and step-by-step guide at bottom. Nothing too revolutionary but pretty well-done ... |

There's a new comet out there, but it's not easy to spot unless you know your way around up there.

Anyone watched the Jacques comet? We've had nothing but clouds these days. |

So did anybody get to see aurora that don't normally get to see them? Had I not had to fly to Denver for business I think I would have taken a trip to Crater Lake to see if I could have viewed them from there. kP got up to 7 which is pretty high and I bet they were just crazy in Iceland (jealous!)

I was hopeful, but no luck here. |

I missed them as I was sleeping, but we had a great display right outside my front door (well, 500 metres away) last night. I clearly had not been paying attention.

We were "supposed" to see them and it was supposed to be "fair" conditions.. I did try to go out but because of the rain/and storms, the skies were not really clear enough to see it, go figure.. that picture is beautiful!! What a wonderful capture |

No comets, however I was out taking pictures of the moon and my neighbor saw me.. he had a very, very expensive telescope.. the real ones that are so techy that if you don't have it exactly on the north star or even where its level, it won't find nothing. It took him about 30 minutes just to set it up, but he allowed me to look through it when the hunters moon was out, not only that but we got to see saturn and its ring..the huge craters on the moon, which I never saw before.. the coolest thing I ever saw, then he pushed it on the constilation Cassiopeia... in the middle of that some stars were busted up and we could actually see the particals from the star busting up
Him, his wife and I were out until 1am exploring and playing with the telescope. He said that there are special rings to buy to put on this telescope that way a camera could be attatched to it, but I am trying to debate if this would be wort while to do, but I also fear it will be too expensive .. but it was really super neat never the less.
An awesome clear night for us!
