When I first read the announcement I was going to suggest that percentiles would be a more accurate way of ranking photos, but they still might have to be "normalized" to account for the sometimes wild variation in the number of entries in different challenges. But I agree, as written it sounds like the highest scores were to be added up to coprise the team score.

Yes, thanks I did read all that Barry. And it did read as the matches will be based entirely on ultimate score instead of percentiles. I just wanted to make sure of that.

As you probably already know; the scores given out in expert challenges are (with few exceptions) much higher than those given to the other rulesets. So it seems to me on any week there is an expert challenge the team that does best in that one is much more likely to win the match.

I really enjoy league play and would like to participate in this one. I think any of my former league teammates will attest to the fact that I am a very committed member once play starts. I just don't see myself having the time to invest in doing expert challenges if they were to come up. So I reluctantly feel I need to pass on this league play opportunity. That makes me sad- so I just wanted to make sure the rules really were going to be as already posted. That is all. And I hope the rules as stated do work for most people so everyone who does play has a great time :)

Brent, I just got a 5th place in an expert challenge with an entry that's close to basic-legal, and is definitely advanced-legal.

I'm still writing this. Frankly I'll probably base it off of the percentiles, rounded to the nearest 10, then set that as the score effective 0-10, with ties quite possible in this manner, then I'll likely roll those scores (0-0.5-1) into a team score, which will then determine the award of 0-0.5-1.5-2-3 or 3.5 points per team, as determined by wins, losses, ties, and bonus scores (determined by full team participation).

I'll describe the full system after it's written, as things might change somewhat if needed.

(The hope was that another member might be writing this part of the code, but it's looking like I'm going to be doing it after all.)

And you should be proud of that shot too Robert :)
It is indeed possible to do well in and expert challenge with something less than a time consuming composite image. Unfortunately (depending on your point of view) that isn't exactly the norm. So depending on the topic you're still stuck with potentially having to put many hours of processing into an image if you hope to have it finish well.

Thanks for explaining what is likely to be the rules Cory, and for all your hard work coding as well. It seems the rules might end up more like what would work for me (and hopefully most others too!). I'll wait and see what develops and if being a participant is still an option at that time I might join in on the fun :)

I agree with your sentiments even though I finished fourth once with near minimal editing once in an expert challenge.
Expert editing challenges do have a significant jump in scores relative to other challenges, at least the winning entries do. So it would be best to put all your eggs into that basket if scores were the sole factor in determining score.

Brent, just consider that this could be said for any genre. If there is a street shooting challenge, or macro, or whatever, there will be those who excel at it and others (like me) who would be the weak link. While expert editing is certainly more time-consuming on the computer end, the other genres can be more time consuming on the capture portion.

There is truth in what you say Johanna. Minimal challenges especially can require a huge amount of time in the field to not only come up with a nice scene, but one that works for the frame ratio of your particular camera as well. And I remember having to do "Street Portraits" during the final of DPL2- that was a long hard shoot!
In my case I should have practiced doing intricate composite images just to be efficient at them for potential competitions even I have other genres I prefer to shoot. I haven't done that "homework" yet though, ensuring that in my case the processing of such images will likely take an inordinately long time to complete :-/

Maybe doing some composite homework would be a good new years resolution for me...
