Dates: 2013 May, June & July

Deb & I will be spending most of May around NYC & Philly visiting rellies. We do a lot of caravanning here in Oz and love the lifestyle, so at the end of May it is our intention to hire an RV and make our way to Denver over the next 7-8 weeks.

Current stops will be:
New England area
Toronto
Badlands NP
Mt Rushmore
Rocky Mountains

Would love your thoughts on any 'must see' destinations along the way and if you have any recommendations on the RV hire thing and camping grounds to stay in (already looked at KOA).

BTW: We're thinking C class 19-22'

How far north in New England? I live in Northern NH and the Franconia Notch State Park and Mt Washington are great places to visit.

We are totally open to small detours. I would imagine this would be easy to factor in on the way to Toronto, I'll go plug it in to google maps, thanks for the suggestion.

I'm always game to meet up with people.
Let me know when you roll through Toronto. It's an excuse to get out of the house.

Seeing as I thought Denver was the capital of Texas for several years when I first emigrated, I have no idea as to where you are going.

But we have a whole ton of cactus , spikey cactus, jumping cactus and hell on wheels piss ant cactus that get in your arse even when you are 2 miles away from the damn thing, and cowboys and the poisonous toads, snakes, scorpions and spiders, plants, killer ants and rabid bats are less of an issue! Lol if you wanna come and stay with me. John Wayne and Marilyn Monroe and several Native American tribes are all over my area including all the movie sets for the Cowboys and Indian Movies,, it is really cool. It is beyond cool when you see they have scrawled out their names in the wooden sidewalks in my town.

So come and stay my end of the world, it is on the SW side, the side that never gets any natural disastrous and will be the only place to live when the world comes to an end. Well,. bar those poisonous thingys.

What sort of activities are you looking for? Do you enjoy hiking etc?

if you're in philly, dc is only a couple hours south and that would be well-worth taking a couple days to visit.

... jeez, he could spend that much time just driving around the city trying to find the right off ramp.

Yellowstone is fantastic if you can work it in - 1 or 2 days suggested - drive through with stop to watch Old Faithful once is 4 hours minimum.
There is another mountain sculpture near Mt. Rushmore of Crazy Horse (still being worked on).
Near Denver is Colorado Springs, the Air Force Academy, Rocky Mt. Park, Estes Park, a small gauge railroad (1 day min - up and back - have a photographers' tour where they stop the train along the way so you can take pictures.
I love Arcadia National Park near Bar Harbor, ME - but that may be a bit too far East of your route.
Also spectacular is Bryce Canyon in UT (again, probably too far south and west of your route).
You'll have to do another trip to the West Coast (Northern CA redwoods, Oregon cascades & ocean, Seattle / Tacoma / Puget Sound in WA state, up thru Vancouver BC in Canada.

I absolutely love your ambitious trek and do hope you have taken the time to map out your routes to the various places and the amount of distance you will have to cover... that is one massive undertaking.

I am not certain as to the rules for vehicle rentals, but I seem to recall that cross border rentals was a bit of a problem if your rental traveled between the US and Canada. Oh, the speeds in the USA are in MPH and KPH in Canada and we all drive on the other side of the road.

I have travelled extensively in both Canada and the USA so feel free to PM me if you think I might be of some assistance.

Let me know what you want to check out.
Museums, restaurants, photography locations, anything except shopping, and I can steer you in the right direction.

About the only thing I can't find, at least not on the cheap, is a true Canadian restaurant. I only know of one in Toronto, but it's upper echelon and would run around $100/person.

I would avoid Canada all together. Everything costs 35% less in the USA. Canadians are way sexier than Americans, but that's about all Canada has going for it.

ETA... Of course, your odds of being shot to death in the USA are much higher.

Not everything...medical and dental costs in the USA could put you in the poor house.

Oh, and when you visit Canada, you don't have to worry about those pesky traffic cameras which are so prevalent in Australia. The speed signs are mere suggestions... except for Slippy, but he speeds just so he can meet our nice police officers.

Enjoy your trip

Guys can't thank you enough for all your responses. Would love to do Yellowstone didn't realise it was so close to Mt Rushmore so we will try to detour via there.

@Chris: Deb's got a female cousin in Toronto so that takes care of the shopping, but I may take you up on the rest of it.
@Ray: Only planning on doing Toronto this trip as I backpacked across Canada in the 70's. We may not be able to hire an RV that let's us cross the border.
@Slippy: My wife is dying to meet you....seems she holds you responsible for posting a link to TBS FPV (if you don't know what this is maybe it wasn't you). After seeing that my life hasn't been the same and so far I'm out about $10k.

Re the US gun thang....I'm kinda relying on Darwin's theory.

Hey dont worry about the gun thing...If you were swinging closer to me I would be happy to take you out shooting

Well, since it seems we're planning a Philly gtg in the spring, you should be able to make it.

Gotta hit the Maine coast, and maybe even the north if you are adventurous...

Sounds like our Slippy, yup. Will you be bringing the FPV gear with you? I'd love a demo...

In the Colorado Rockies... Trail Ridge Road, alpine lakes, mountain summits and Sand Dunes NP are worthy of your time. I would be honored if you would join one of my guided bird walks in June or July. Free, no reservation required. Check for days and times, as they have not been scheduled, yet.

I was super excited to help when I saw the post because I've done 3 or 4 cross country trips but all the spots you are going to are the ones I haven't!

I will suggest this, bring an insulated water bottle and fill it up with water (and ice if you like) when you get gas at the stations instead of buying bottled. Saves money, plastic, and keeps your water cold. :)

From what I can gather you won't need to rent an rv because it doesn't sound like sleep is an option on this trip!!!

Enjoy whatever you see & take lots of pictures!
