Older member here. I let my membership lapse a couple of years ago and life got in the way of my creative outlet. I was thinking about getting back involved in some challenges and noticed the participating is down from when I used to submit (perhaps that was the hey-day of dpchallenge).

Not trolling or complaining just observing...

So what do some of the really active members here think? Participation down? Lower quantity higher quality? Still good critique? Reasons for the drop? More options out there on the interwebs?

Participation is down.
Old hat and the new guard don't always mix.
Image quality the same.
I give the best comments, they're all marked helpful except by MNet.
Slightly more options out there.

As always, you have to totally blow people away just to get them to say "Eh, I guess it's ok."

participation is down.

quality is about the same. Although there have been some challenges recently where I thought the quality really was pretty bad, but then there have been some challenges where I thought the quality was above and beyond. So the quality is about the same. :)

Critique? Less comments than before. Don't expect comments. However, most of the time, you really already know what's right and wrong with your photo. What's still awesome about this place is if you post your photo for comments/critique after the fact, because you really don't understand what went right/wrong, you'll get a lot of feedback.

This still is the best place for exploring. The other options are still the "nice photo" options. I think people get tired and move away. The problem is that we don't get a large influx of new people.

Oh -- and it's a good time to join back up -- there's a photo league starting up. (someone have the link? I gotta run...)

Seems that way, but still busy enough. I keep saying I am tapering off because I'm spending more time riding my bike than going out to take photos. I seem to be taking all my photos from the saddle however, and still entering 1 or 2 challenges a week.

Welcome back! It's always interesting to see folks disappear and then return...

True.

Yup.

Still great though. We still have a great core of active and vocal members. Venser is a newer fellow who has no qualms about being opinionated and active, the sort of folk DPC needs and thrives with. He rubs folks the wrong way at times but isn't going to give you the run around so I much appreciate his candor.

Quality is still high and still of a certain aesthetic, it is what it is.

Tons more expert challenges seem to scare off lesser versed folks since they are dominated by a select few members generally and are very editing intensive. Langdon has been MIA according to SC, so folks have took it upon themselves to start up another league. It will be starting soon- details here.

Things are much more community run with less input from the top down. You have to work to keep your interest alive, you have to purposefully cultivate community and friends. Forum isn't as active, but responses are still extremely good for content and you get far less flippant responses and jackassery than other places, but that's because things are under a far tighter reign (than other places), so take that for what you will.

I still find it to be my favorite photo place, though you may have to ask around a bit more to get the same number of comments.

I appreciate him everytime I need to blame a lowball vote on someone. Actually, he's sometimes been the one to see the same thing I did in a shot that was mediocre for the collective.

And we haven't been able to drive him off yet, so we may as well appreciate him for something.

Entries/challenge numbers are down some from a couple of years ago, but there are now three challenges (two member only, one open) every week, in addition to the monthly Free Study challenge.

There have also been a few "oddball" challenges which attracted signficantly fewer entries than usual ... it's getting harder to think up new topics, after more than 1600 challenges, which aren't either banal, outrageous, or repetitive. Feel free to offer suggestions for topics you think would be popular. :-)

And you won't. I like voting. It passes the time when I'm bored.
I just wish the topics were more interesting. I like extremely restrictive topics because I'm good at thinking outside of the box. The minute I see it's a free study, or can be bastardized into one, I have little interest and shoot for the brown if I even bother.

Fair enough.
I like the restrictive challenges. Forces people to either shoot a phenomenal shot or think outside the box.

Topics like the following:
Chess
Rooftops
A spoon, a fork, and a toothpick
Low key with animals
Telephone
Yellow pants
...

I don't know, stupid things like that and force people to become creative. As opposed to the standard catchall challenges.

Venser, the thing is with the challenges, is that we have NO ONE to BLAME but OURSELVES.

You see what happens, is who ever suggests a challenge and writes about it, is picked and word for word is put into the computer thingy, churned up and then made into a challenge.

So if WE want better challenges, we want more descriptive explanations, then WE have to do it!

So anyone that really bitches and whines about boring challenges have no one else to blame really. WE are making the challenges, we give the explanation.

So come up with better challenges!

How about that time in the summer when mike_311 and Cory came up with around 10 each and not a single one got chosen. You mean like that time?

I'm just going to keep submitting shit photos until I get motivated. Force voters to either skip my entries or push me to the bottom.

All that said above, I'm perfectly fine with textures, especially at minimal. Now I just have to come up with an idea.

I would suggest something textured. You're welcome.

I made some suggestions a long time ago, but have since given up, as I don't seem to be on the list of acceptable contributors either.

Explosion Triptych
Get some explosives, firecracker, gas, whatever will explode violently. Make a triptych. Don't get hurt.

Orgasm Portrait
A portrait done as if in the throes of passion. You or your model can pretend, or do it for real, just keep the shot from the shoulders up. ;-)

Boot to The Head
no description

Destruction in Motion !
Get a shot of something in the process of being destroyed and/or broken. Drop stuff off a ten story tower. Drive over something with your car. DESTROY, DESTROY, DESTROOOOY !!!!!

America's Funniest Home Photo
Take a photograph in the tradition of AFV. Extra points for compound fractures and gushing blood!

Meh, I probably just lack creativity and that's tough crap for me.

Welcome back Tom. As you can see not much has changed as far as hijacking and whining! :-)

Eta: this will be in rant after a few more posts.

I LOVE these!!! Especially the flatware one. What great ideas. And NO, I'm not being facetious.

ETA

Welcome back, Tom. The things you loved about DPC are still here. Coincidentally, so are the things you didn't.
