Just curious as to why this didn't do better. too simple, too literal, processing? To be honest, I expected a 6+

this image i feel needed to be tack sharp to score well and im not sure it looks that way to others, this image gave me fits to trying to get it to look sharp when i exported to the 800pixel limit, the full res version looks beautiful, but when i got it here i'm not thrilled and im wondering it got docked points for that.

I would have expected it to score well into the six range. Nicely executed, very good compo and beautiful model. People probably already had opinions about the kind of silence they were looking for before voting, you fell in the wrong lot maybe.

I gave you an 8, it is well shot but is a very simple, forgettable entry. Technically it is good, For a portrait I would tone down the highlights on her hand as they are a little bright and pull the attention away from the face since it is brighter but if you wanted her hand and mouth to be the focal point her face should be a bit darker so you are really drawn to the mouth. Perhaps a crop below the eyes to really draw attention to the lips would have helped really draw you in, especially with the silence theme.

Way too literal (you were not the only one with the same idea). The image in itself has nothing wrong of course.

I think everything scored quite low in the challenge. Jagar's probably right -- people had different ideas for which they were looking. Notice that the blue came in at 6.6 -- which is extremely low for a blue.

It is very nicely done, I like the tones.

But I think one of your commentors was right, it's not that original of an idea. Also, just because someone says shhh, doesn't mean things are silent. :)

+1 That particular idea has been done to death. However the shot itself is quite nice, I gave you a 7.

Absolutely, but look at the overall scores in this challenge (blue ribbon 6.6, 20th barely above 6), your score is more than 0.3 above average and median score, so nothing wrong scorewise. Thought, as a technically well done shot that meets the challenge it would place a little higher, though - on the other hand it is nothing really special (from a voters POV).

I don't understand the scoring system at all.

That shot just does not do anything for me. I find it mediocre so I'd give it a mediocre score, a five or six at best. Doesn't compare to many of your other shots for sure. Just my opinion. :)

Personally I thought it was a decent pic...I gave it a 6.

I agree with most here. people had an idea of what silence portrayed for them, I expected to see a lot of those particular shots.

it was well executed and a decent shot... but just not one that resonated as much as others in the challenge.

I am the last one to ask about formulas or what makes a shot score well.

That being said, you have a great technical shot, a stock photo as previously said, but it is a touch sterile, missing context, needing a twist.

forgive my awfulpiss poor photoshop skills,

perhaps a touch of playfulness, a bit less serious, with the eyes looking off screen, the lips turned up and the eyebrow raised. the emphasis shifts, rather than competes with the shushing finger, and the whole coyness of the shot would speak about not literal silence, but of the need to keep silent, adding mysterious interest.

It scored pretty well, I don't get the 1's 2's 3's or even 4's which really tanked the average. Most scored it well. I stopped worrying about averages a long time ago - first I shoot to please myself and second to read comments on what others think of the shot, even the critical ones. Don't get me wrong I love ribbons but don't lose sleep over what amounts to an average of what experts (many of whom are not experts except in their own minds)

At the beginning of this year I entered a picture that I really didn't like because I noticed that those type of photographs scored well. It scored pretty well but I felt like I needed a shower, from then on I will only enter what I feel is my style, and what I like. That said, the feedback here is fantastic, you get a feel for how the shots are perceived by others, just take it with a grain of salt.

thanks for the feedback, i admit it isn't really creative (but neither are two of the ribboners) i used it more as a chance to play with lighting and glamor processing than a creative exercise.

generally clean tack sharp images do well so i was wondering why it wasn't scoring over a 6, in fact for most of the early part of the voting it was sitting at a low five.

the shot compared to most of the others, pardon the pun, is very in your face and i expected it to stand out by that alone.

one votes dont bother me but when i see a bunch or 2,3,4's i wonder if i blew some aspect of the image or it contained some flaw i wasn't seeing.

I think it is a very nice image technically. I think the lighting and processing are very good and your model is attractive, but I agree with blindjustice that a more engaging expression would have boosted your score.
