At this point not alot can be done. The cleanup efferts will eventually contain environmental issues. Katrina is a great example. There were tens of thousands of vehicles submerged (and other toxic items). In a way the gulf coast is still cleaning up that mess. It will be a long road for New York, New Jersey, and all of the other effected areas.

The effort might reduce a lake of pollution by a teaspoon, and who is going to pay for that work? If people are unwilling to address the empirically undeniable problem that leads to more intense storms, good luck getting them to address the consequences.

Cory I live on the water and know one loves the ocean more than me.
BUT people are still struggling to survive.
I have a family of 5 living with me along with my wife and 2 kids because they lost everything.
I have 4 adults 5 kids and 2 dogs along with no power, no heat and no hot water.
At night it's pitch black and only so much police to go around.
I would rather have the Coast guard and the Army chore protecting my family and friends rather than
picking up garbage on the shoreline.
Don't worry Corey we'll get the ocean clean but it's just gonna have to wait.

I hate to sound insensitive, as I do feel for those who've been affected, but I do find the "we have problems, let the environment take care of itself" idea to be ..

Ahh, the heck with it. Shannon is completely right. We're screwed.

If we can clean up the Valdez we can clean this.
It's actually more debris than oil and gas which is much easier to clean up.
The gas will evaporate off the water and most is probably gone already.
Were I live I don't see any oil in the water still some traces of gas
from downed boats and tons of debris.

Despite Exxon's claims that the spill was cleaned up, the Valdez oil spill continues to have negative effects on the wildlife and the environment in the Prince William Sound. It's estimated that those effects will persist for 30+ years.

The point is that the Valdez oil spill isn't really "cleaned up".

just set it all on fire...

see solutions are simple, getting the public to buy into it is the hard part. I'm willing to make the tough calls, vote for me tomorrow.

The debris is actually REALLY good news IMO, as vegetation and debris can act like a sponge for the hydrocarbons.

Still, I really wish we were able to take active steps to mitigate this.

Look, I'm not particularly a fan of New Jersey or New York, but I think just burning the place to the ground is a little extreme. ;)

Perhaps except for Bruce, New Jersey hardly ever gets any respect.
According to Peter Sagal, host of NPR's Wait Wait Don't Tell Me news quiz/humor show,
"If New Jersey sank into the ocean, the Times headline would read 'New Yorkers Must Take Ferry To Philadelphia' ..." :-)

This is just amazing. Here's some "before and after" imagery. How'd they DO that!
NOAA images after the storm. Move your mouse over the image to see the 'before' and 'after'.

Amazing the work that has to be done. I enjoyed those subway shots even though they didn't all seem to load.

The Nor'easter's hammering us on the Cape right now. Howling winds, somewhere in the vicinity of 50 mph. No serious damage I've heard of so far, however. How's it going for the NYC/NJ peoples?

It's been snowing here for a while. It's not sticking to the roads though.

It sounds like the storm is heading north of us (Greater Phila area). So far, just some minor snow squalls and a little wind.. nothing major. Pls keep us posted!

I'm seeing shots of flooding at the Jersey shore on Severe NJ's facebook page. There's a map in there that puts me in the heavy snow area. Hoping they're a bit off on that one! ;D //www.facebook.com/SevereNJwx
