Nice way to have politics take a back seat...
President Obama acted promptly, if not preemptively, to minimize the time required to get relief to those affected by Sandy.
Governor Romney held a relief event to help provide necessities for those affected by Sandy, and his campaign contributed towards the goods, as well as ordinary everyday folks.
And, most importantly, friends and neighbors have gone out of their way to help each other.
Good on them all, I say.

Well that was actually kind of my point. The same cynicism that says that Obama is only trying to get votes should say the same about Romney. Instead, let's just focus on what each is actually doing to help, or better yet, just leave them completely out of this conversation, and save the politics for rant.

Edit to restate the part of my quote you took out, to keep the context that I intended.

Our power came back on today. New Jersey is a royal mess, the whole state. Good luck filling your tank here. Or buying ice.

Sounds like how it was here in late June.
I even called the company that brought in all the ice for the stores, it was over an hour away... they wouldn't let us buy directly from them, though prior to the storm, random people were able to buy. THAT sucked! It was over 100 degrees every day for almost 2 weeks, and we had NO POWER that entire time.
We ended up getting a hotel room (one of the last available in the city and surrounding cities... people were actually driving from over 2 hours away to stay there because it was one of the only ones with power). We stayed there 13 days... over $1,000!!!!
But, the kids were able to play in the pool, AND they had free breakfast AND ice. Not to mention A/C.

Had Dallas not had this accident, we would have camped and roughed it out at the lake. Couldn't do that though.

Which is why we were praying we didn't lose power for any length of time... it would be another financially straining time... luckily, we didn't lose power!

Hope everyone is doing well!

Say, I just realized that, whatever its other faults, DPC did NOT go down during the worst of the storm ... :-)

Your post is direct evidence against the old saw that "nobody notices when things go right." :-)
Indeed, we motored right through it. And a good thing it is, there would have been enough withdrawal symptoms to keep a clinic full of counselors busy!

100% uptime, as far as I noticed. Indeed, DPC was a touchstone for people, both the storm impacted and the concerned from a distance.

Yeah, but it took three days — evidence FOR the other old saw about 20/20 hindsight ... :-)

I am sure that they have redundant systems....They prob have 2 or 3 off-site servers that mirror themselves to elliminate loss of service

An acquaintance of mine from the Miami Yacht Club made it into the CNN photo line-up.

What's surprising is that we got so much storm surge for days because of this thing, lost a lot of beach too - the water was over a foot deep in places on the streets here on the island for almost a week with each tide.

It is so strange up here. After 9/11 we had so much loss of life and a lot of people displaced, but now there are just so many people with nothing. Breezy Point was such a great community where I spent many happy hours with friends as a kid growing up and it is just gone. My daughter and I are OK and will be OK because the worst thing is we will have to wait in line for something.

My office is not accessible so I couldn't even figure out how to pay my few employees since the bank and payroll people were no where to be found online. Finally got them paid today.

On Saba [an island in the Caribbean] we have had Cat 4 and Cat 5 hurricanes, but it is a small community and we are used to the power going out (kind of a weekly occurrence), can get water from cisterns by hand if we need to, so we're sort of prepared for this. Here on Sunday night people were buying gourmet cheese and fresh fruit for the storm. I wanted to tell them... go for the Carnation canned milk and Spam!

I've had 8 people in my 500 square foot apartment since Monday and boy is it tiring for all of us.

Saturday we are going to have to go to my office, walk up 25 flights, get the server, carry it, try not to have a heart attack doing it :) since our remote servers are also without electricity (guess they weren't as remote as I thought!).

Anyway ... I'm now officially rambling.... thanks so much for checking in on us. Hope you guys are doing OK down there. Makes me feel more thankful for all we have.

i can't even begin to imagine...

It's interesting to watch the emergency crews zip around and lights go out. It looks like the power outage starts in the distance on the right, then the right front, but there's some in the middle of those sections that stay on a little longer before going out. I'm not sure how grids work and how a building stores power, but I find those center buildings interesting. Since it's time-lapse they probably stayed on a several minutes longer than everyone else around them... I dunno, I just find that curious, because I don't know how it works.

CNN has posted a list of some of the victims. It's alarming how many people died to carbon monoxide poisoning from generators in their garage. Also, the amount of tree related deaths is amazing. How is it that trees always seem find people when they fall? Maybe it's because people seek shelter near them in storms, but these didn't seem to be because of that. There was a couple kids killed in their home (parents lived), and a couple parents killed in their car (kids both lived). Just so sad...

Connor Moore, 4, and Brandon Moore, 2, were ripped from their mother's arms on Staten Island during the storm. Their bodies were recovered on Thursday.

How horrible....
