One tip on keeping things cold if you have to transfer perishables to a cooler.

Use salt...a lot of salt dumped on the ice. It will help drop the temp of the cooler giving you a bit of extra time so your perishables last.

So my husband picks up a case of beer for himself and water for me.

That's just wrong!

(I don't like beer -- but he could have at least picked up some strawberry margarita mix -- when all of the ice starts melting, we'd have to use it up quick!)

Some stormy music... Riding the storm out

This was a great concert (though the footage is from a different city, I saw it in Philly).

Excellent!

Some ideas for those who may be homebound during the storm.

Key Largo is on neither list. What a shame.

Peck and Mitchum, hands down. But I'll (almost) always pick the original.

Three. ;-)

Arguably the scariest.

Wendy, I have a gas grill, a full tank of propane and a freezer full of meats. I can easily throw a can of veggies in a pot on the grill to go with the meats. I think we'll be fine. I think the level of panic going on around here is crazy. In the worst storms (and there have been some) the most I've ever lost power for is 2 days. And there were still plenty of stores open running on generators.

If you fill the freezer the rest of the way with 16oz bottles of water a few days ahead of the anticipated power down, then it will make an "ice bank" to help hold the frozen food longer, as well as serving as an emergency fresh drinking water supply.
If it's a chest freezer, you can gain at least a day or two of power off cold storage by getting enough styrofoam or insulation board to "wrap" it, and improve the insulation R factor.

Way ahead of you! The water bottles are already in the freezer!

Not much going on with our storm right now. Rain had stopped. Wind has stopped. Things have been moved back a bit. We were supposed to start tonight, but it sounds like it's more tomorrow night now.

Looking really bad for new york city.

Stay safe everyone. Please update us on how it's going.

We are on the extreme edge of it all - which sounds funny since I'm in Ohio. Winds are my only concern here.

Good luck!

Weather's starting to get downright feisty up here... I've got the next two entries in, thinking I better process a Free Study tonight as well...

New words for me from this Frankenstorm event::

An extratropical cyclone.

A two storm gyre with retrograde motion. North Atlantic Gyre.

Hope my DPC friends are in a safe, high, dry place by now. Please check in somehow and periodically to let us know you're okay.

I do too, anyone heard from Penny, Eli or Mariuca, I tried PM' Mariuca but didn't hear back, I'm assuming she has evacuated.
