It is archaic. ;D

Long lines, blind old people who can't find your name in the book, people handing out stickers (like the kind they give your kid at the dentist) to put on your chest saying "I've voted!". Yep, very archaic indeed.

Part of me misses that process. The gyms, the civic pride of voting, the nice old ladies, the koolaid, the satisfying crunch of pulling that lever. OTOH, I got a political call last night and the conversation ended quickly with a, "I've already voted."

And I forgot, the dirty old men who'd like to put your sticker on you themselves. ROFL!

The news said there will also be a full moon, aggravating the storm surge. But hahn23, didn't you once correlate the full moon with earthquakes? Batten the hatches!

Atlantic City is already making plans to close the casinos (which almost never happens) and evacuations have been posted at some Jersey shore towns because of the expected flooding from the storm combined with the full moon.

We still have all that. Except we vote by marking our ballots with a fat black felt-tip pen. No chads for us! Paper trails rule!

Yup! We have the same thing! Do you connect the tail of an arrow to the arrowhead or fill in a dot?

We love paper!

(actually, I kind of like the paper trail idea, even though it's such a waste of paper. At least there's something to recount. I've seen too many badly programmed computers to have complete trust in the system :)

We finish the two-headed arrow by drawing the line. Very satisfying.

Hurricane Sandy Eyes Coast
Eastern Seaboard Prepares For Possible Flooding; Inland Areas Gird for Snow

Hurricane Sandy was downgraded this morning, but is expected to morph into Frankenstorm as it turns west on Sunday night or Monday and collides with a snow storm approaching from the west. There is a large high pressure system over Greenland which will block the normal path of hurricanes moving out into the Atlantic. Instead, the high pressure system will cause Hurricane Sandy to make a left hand turn into the East coast of the US.

It's back to a hurricane again.

Indeed, it is.
Projection of possible power outages.

Batteries and standby generators will be at a premium.

If you wanna change plans;

American, United and Spirit airlines announced late Friday they would waive fees for passengers traveling in and out of many Atlantic coast cities who want to change plans.

weather.com used the worst possible adjective for a storm: "unprecedented"

The huge irony is the west central US needs rain so badly, it's not funny. Even with a few inches of snow in the past few days, we continue to be tinder dry with wildfire risk ongoing. We would take the copious amounts of rain from the hurricane (not the wind, thanks) in a heartbeat.

Saturday is my normal shopping day. I'm going to skip the actual shopping because it's a madhouse out there, but I'll have to hit at least one store for milk (because I'm out). I'm dreading this. I really don't understand the need to go stock up on stupid stuff because of a storm. It's not like you'll be trapped in your house for weeks.

In California the "standard" emergency preparedness recommendations include having 3 days worth of food and potable water stockpiled at all times. One of the problems with some "stocking up" is that (residential) power is likely to be out longer than perishables unavailable in stores.

in 2005 wilma knocked out power in so fla for 3 weeks in lots of neighborhoods, mine included. waiting on line for hours for water was not uncommon.

the first week was just clearing all the downed greenery. it was a nightmare of cold showers.

I didnt understand, either. But when you live in a small town, when the power is off, a lot of the stores are out of power, and you're out of luck. Also, when the power if off, EVERYONE is looking for batteries. Might as well be prepared. In MN, we were only out of power for a day or two. 4 days to 2 weeks without power put things more into perspective. Peanut butter was a necessity. You'd think that you'd be set for food, but most of the sanned stuff needed heating.

Our camp sttove caught on fire in yellowstone. So thats not an option. :)

But do you really need 40 rolls of toilet paper? LOL! That's what I'm talking about. Do you need 6 gallons of milk? If the power goes out for a week, how are you going to keep 6 gallons of milk from going bad? I'm stocked up on candles, flashlights, batteries & books. That's all I need. ;D

Wendy, I have a gas grill, a full tank of propane and a freezer full of meats. I can easily throw a can of veggies in a pot on the grill to go with the meats. I think we'll be fine. I think the level of panic going on around here is crazy. In the worst storms (and there have been some) the most I've ever lost power for is 2 days. And there were still plenty of stores open running on generators.
