Apparently this thing is a "big deal" in Texas. If that's true, then my condolences to all the Texan DPC'ers.

So Big Tex is Wicker Man?

There are more important things in life. Like getting down all the people that are now stuck at the top of one of the rides at the same fair. Maybe Tex burning was an omen.

You know, I've lived here since '92 and have never been to the state fair.

Any publicity is good publicity, right? Maybe you'll pencil it in for next year.

Too bad I see him for the first time when he is on fire. But I'm not really Texan so am I excused?

Burning Man, the "oops" version. Somewhere in the Black Rock desert of Nevada some ashes and cinders are collectively musing "nice try Texas, but not quite".

Wow, he's been there a long time. Probably very few remember a time when he wasn't.

It's always sad when something like this happens. No, he's not on a level with human lives, hunger, or peace in the middle east. It's one more thing that will never be the same, for many, again...

whoa...

That is incredibly sad. Ambaker is right -- it's not on the level with human lives, hunger, etc., but there's something special about a state fair if it's part of your childhood. I grew up in Minnesota, which has one of the most incredible fairs in the country. And I was really sad when they changed the food building to restaurant food instead of the normal vendors who had been there for umpteen million years. But it wasn't just because I missed Danielsson's pizza, it was all the years of memories: Getting there early, waiting for the food building to open at 9. Dad waiting with me for a slice of pizza. The whole family going each way in the building and regrouping outside. Staking out which was the cheapest pop in the building. Knowing year after year where you could find the kabobs. Being old enough to finally go buy a slice on my own.

And that's just a food building.

We went every year to the state fair. We went with my grandma, and may times other extended family members. Sometimes the relatives came from Wisconsin. Uncle Bill almost always won a blue ribbon for his wood carvings.

Dad would get pronto-pups, and we all loved the mini-donuts.

We lost my grandma. Jeff and I started going out, and he took me to the fair.

Dad is gone, and mom can't go to the fair anymore. Jeff and I take our kids to the Virginia state fair. It's not nearly as good as Minnesota, but we go each year.

I've never been to the Texas fair, or seen Big Tex, but when the news story said that people were standing around crying -- I understood.

RIP Big Tex

Here's the video.

RIP Tex indeed. Hell of a funeral pyre.

I happened to get a chance to attend the Texas State Fair in the late '90s, and I remember seeing Big Tex. 'Tis a sad thing to see him taken out like that. It seems, though, that he will rise again!
I'm a fan of State Fairs, and FWIW, Wisconsin has one of the best. Just sayin'.

Wow. My hubs a dyed in the wool Texan will be sad. We went to the Texas state fair on our honeymoon just so he could show me big tex and eat Fletcher's cony dogs
