Okay, I just wanted to know how people would feel about having the votes weighted by category??

As in, a vote cast by a non-participant is worth twice that of a participant, and a vote from a commenter (with a minimum of say, 15 characters) is worth twice that of a non-commenter (compounded when non-participant)...

I realize that this will never happen, but I am just interested in what our members think..

Exactly.

Nah...

That's saying that the commenters and non participants are more knowledgeable and thus more accurate and should be weighted more heavily. Which is definitely not always the case. So even without people looking to game the system, the suggestion is flawed.

The scores would go up :-)

In hopes of accomplishing what?
It's not that I'm disagreeing, I just don't see the point. You haven't explicitly said why you think it's a bad idea.

My voting average is pretty much constant across all challenges, even the ones in which I'm a participant. The only challenges where my average changes by any reasonable amount are the recent slew of expert challenges with under 40-50 entries. The numbers just aren't there to revert my mean back to where it normally lies.

I would hardly ever vote if that were the case.

Where's that dead horse icon...?

I like this idea, but its hard enough to get people to vote- you may drop the size of the sample too much.

I have never been for forcing people to leave comments, but how about if you enter a challenge and vote in a challenge, your votes become public after rollover- That would essentially force "extreme" low voters to justify, or face wrath and scorn or the community,(much like Gollum being kicked out of his community for fratricide.)

I can find no reason not to make votes public after the challenge is done- except to, what- "protect the privacy of extreme low voters and those who slag all other entries but theirs" - My take is that from all these threads the people who vote the way they like will continue without regard for public opinions, feelings, etc.

We already know how people vote by simply looking at their voting average.

My voting average is about 1/2 point above the DPC average, but I'd rather not have all of my individual votes analyzed. That's going a bit too far.

Conversely should the "extreme" high voters have to justify their votes also? Ohh, what's that you say, gold stars for everyone. Yay!

I wouldn't change the way I vote if my votes where made public. It would just lead to me either writing, "Don't need to justify shit to you" or "Suck it up you whinny bitch" ad infinitum.

Maybe it's worth mentioning...

In a traditional competition, you send in your entry & wait for the results. Nobody explains why the winners were chosen. You never get to see the other entries. There is no feedback. You enter. You win, or you don't that's it. There are countless competitions out there like that. Take your pick.

The thing that keeps me here is that I can see the other entries. I can vote, or not. Comment or not. It's my choice.

There is no "self benefit" to high votes, there is a benefit to extreme low voting on a challenge in which you participate.

Work out the numbers to see how much of an effect my voting in a challenge in which I participate really alters anything.

The average number of voters over the last 100 challenges is 124. The average vote over those challenges is 5.645.
Now lets inject voter #125, and he's a real prick.
(124*5.645+1)/125 = 5.607
For the most part, inconsequential. If you think people who vote low are doing so to boost their own score, let me know who these people are so I can call them imbeciles.

I get the feeling that DPC is a combination of active photographers and people who enjoy photography, but don't do as much of it. Isn't it possible that the "participants" are just more experienced and more knowledgeable, so a little pickier in their voting?

I don't vote in a challenge I participate in. Don't want to be biased in any way.
But the rest of the idea would be too complicated I think. Many people don't have too much time or patience to comment on pictures.
And about non-participants vs. participants votes, both times I submitted something I got a higher average score from participants.

The whole point is, nothing is going to change. None of this "discussion" matters. It always turns into a

"you don't know shit about people, math, other photography websites, and you want to give every kid a trophy for participation so they don't feel bad" thread.

quite predictable really.

I don't think weighting is a good idea, because it gives more "value" to one group of voters than another. I think dpc has a good cross-section of people who vote - from the highly experienced nit-picking photographer to the "Oooh! Isn't that a pretty picture!" non-photographer to everything in between. Each brings their own perspective to the table, and each has merit and value.

The scores, then, are a real mash of the diversity of the voters, which is, in my opinion, as close to a realistic judgement of the public appeal of a photograph, with maybe a slight advantage for photographers - since they have an appreciation for the effort that can sometimes go into a shot.

I just looked at every challenge this year, and regardless of the number of participants, the number of voters is fairly constant.

Average # of voters: 125.765625
Standard Deviation: 22.90395001
Skew: 1.065071205
Kurtosis: 1.927778792

Even free studies with over 200 participants, the number of voters remains abysmally low. The only time the number of voters cracked 200 this year was the stupid leap year challenge when that high school submitted twenty garbage photos.

edit - Sorry, the point is why would you want to make voting more arduous than it already is. The numbers speak for themselves, and just getting people to vote isn't the easiest thing in the world.

If you can't find it, I could make one... It would have to be animated, like the popcorn one, wouldn't it?
