Chemist? How about a mechanic......that's the ideal pursued by tuners since the internal combustion engine was invented.

Geologist. For some reason we had to be everything. Mechanic because of shit equipment, chemist for obvious reasons, biologist for obvious reasons, mechanical engineer for various reasons, rock climber, outdoor survival, etc. Oh, and you sometimes needed to know something about geology, although admittedly it was rather rare. ;) Yeah, there's a reason I went back to working on computers.. ;)

Langdon needs finding. Seriously AWOL here.

I doubt I will enter again because I only like to take pictures of my kids and of nature and I hate editing photos. I simply don't have the time to devote to becoming a good enough photographer and editor in order to compete here with you all!

We've managed SC membership/culling via natural attrition. I like and respect everyone on SC. I think they do a great job and I'm still with them because I like them so much and I like DPC very much (even if I don't enter challenges I do learn a lot from everyone here).

How do we find Langdon?

Aside from that, the only question is do SC feel they are intact or do they need any new members?

Edited to add - please understand that my interest is in keeping DPC alive and working to it's best potential.

If they do support new voices, then I suggest Bear. I think he would add dimension and would have all our best interests at heart. Great idea.

I just do not see why it is such a big deal to add more SC... Let's pick a few people that we'd like to see as SC and get on with it. Why do we have to keep talking about it? Can't Langdon just add some more folks? Is it really that involved... I don't know. I am ignorant about the work load.

I'm sure there is plenty of SC talk behind the scenes here... Come on... Let's get going on this. If you are a member of SC that just doesn't participate much anymore, let it go and have some fresh meat step up.

I could name a few people who I'd love to see on SC if they would be interested.

I want this place to flourish and stay alive. Why the dragging of the feet? I know how hard it is to have life happen to you and have things that weigh you down... sometimes I couldn't do basic things around the house because all my energy was spent just surviving the day. I get it. I don't know what's going on in Langdon's life, but please, let some other people help with DPC.

From what I can take from some of the postings here. Langdon is missing, not here, can't be found. Absent site owner if you will. The SC can't add SC only Langdon can.

I like a good hunt too. But I'm not sure I own a big enough gun to kill a Bear.

This is exactly what I'm talking about. He's not even on the SC yet and here you are going on about his waist size. Does anyone deserve this kind of scrutiny?

Frankly, I'm just suggesting it for all of the "falling on deaf ears" jokes that will fly about in any further disagreements.

If anyone deserves it, Bear does.

It has become apparent, and has been for some time, that Langdon has lost his poop when it comes to this site and yet it appears there has been little interest in "selling" it per se.

Threads like this are a plea by a community desperate for self governance vs non-existence.

Langdon still loves his website yet he has little enthusiasm to maintain it. The community rightfully fears his neglect will lead to its demise.

So what is the solution?

Convert the site into an open source business where it is operated, governed and enhanced by the community. Ensure Langdon's website endures and allow him to enjoy an income stream in lieu of a cash purchase. The community leverages it's collective wisdom to deliver a sustainable model. Langdon likely knows The time to sell this site had come and gone several years ago.

Langdon wins and ya'll get to knit mitties together for years to come. An open source model is modern and may draw heaps of attention back to a site short on resources yet rich in spirit.

Yes, around about the time dpreview.com was sold, that's when there was an interest in buying this kind of site. Now it's all gone the way of social and apps (e.g. facebook buying instagram)

The revenue isn't increasing, it's flattened out, and from other threads we can hazard a guess that it's on a slow decline. If he was to invest time in making site improvements, then he'd be looking for increased membership, traffic, and revenue.

IMO, the long silence means he's letting it tick over as-is, so he can take whatever profit it makes while he waits for someone to make a reasonable offer to buy. (And even if he lets it die without finding a buyer, it's no big deal - he's still made an overall profit)

My point is, I can't really see the business incentive for Langdon to invest in this site. If he opens the source code to allow the community to develop it, then he loses control (it might start off all nice and friendly like, but one look at the many linux distro communities tells you how these arrangements often end in splits and acrimony)

If you would've stuck with geology, you probably would have evolved to the stage I'm at: filling out government forms. Government leaches are always looking for ways to justify their paychecks. Your exploration geologists want to take a piss while in the field, fill out form 10-40-PISS, but not before running an archaeological review and environmental impact assessment. Don't forget the First Nations, they'll want some money for that because the water in the area is probably sacred. That's a $100,000 piss, so enjoy it!

Move to America. Not much natural gas "fracking" regulations, but, as a benefit, many parts of the country can now light their sinks to stay warm in the winter.

The question is how we might incentivise Langdon to either put in the time to work on the site or give up enough control to allow others to do so. Frankly the only method of influencing him seems to be quitting the site, but since we have seen a massive drop off in membership with no action, I expect he will keep it on auto pilot until it runs out of gas. If only he had the same energy for the site that folks like Bear_Music do.

I came to this conclusion as well and it is why I did not re-up my membership.
