At one point, the SC (including yours truly) was active in transferring suggestions to the database. When we did, we were expected to review and make sure they were ready for use. Is that not happening these days?

I'm guessing our limited resources are concentrated elsewhere at this time ... however, as I pointed out, this is something which the members can largely take care of themselves, if the challenge suggestions threads were used to refine the description, rather than argue about what will or won't be DNMC ...

If the resources are limited, perhaps the SC as a whole needs to get to Langdon and express their concern for help so that Limited isn't the issue. There are people here willing to help the SC with their duties, and their are SC who aren't pulling their weight. Get it through to Langdon however you have to do that, and get some help!

He also needs to hire that community manager, and make damn sure he gets his money's worth.

I was hoping that he'd hire SDW -- then maybe we'd have DPL again. :(

Is DPC dying?

I tried to give it mouth to mouth and it slipped me the tongue.

...and when one considers the number of other venues available to the masses, I am not the least bit surprised at the drop experienced in DPC.

I well remember the days when our local TV station offered all of 3 channels and now I have access to well over a 100... Do I watch more TV because of it... No, mainly due to the fact I have many more options to spend my free time on.

The same goes for DPC and other similar venues.

Looking at the forum activity tonight I'd say things are jumping like in the old days, when a thread rolled off the front page in an hour. :-)

I had noticed recently that we had about a 24 hour span showing on the front page for forum thread activity.

We are the passengers in Langdon's car -- yelling and screaming.

I just "Ponied Up" only so that I can take part in the FS and next years FSM. Those are the only challenges that suit my style and lifestyle. It would be nice to have had a coupon code but $2 a month is not a heavy price to pay. Mind you I haven't seen a coupon code being offered in 3 years. I like to read the For Sale forum and I like to take part in side challenges. I've all but given up in Expert Editing challenges, fill in your own reasons why. Adding "Share" buttons in PHP is a simple matter and would assist in the marketing of the site for little or no additional cost. Coming and saying "Hi" even with a new addition to the family is pretty easy. Many of us are also married with kids. There are still valuable photographic threads and tutorials and many winners are very helpful with their "How'd they do that" comments.

I've been a member for quite a few years (I think 2004?). And the website hasn't changed since I joined. It's time for a website redesign! Breath some life into the website ;-).

I arrived in 2004 but have been inactive for some time due to illness and a general lack of interest with photography in general. I have just started entering the open challenges again. I am still toying with renewing my membership again.

Maybe the challenges are at times too challenging in subject with many simply dis interested in them.I enjoy the challenge but also enjoy the fun of doing it simply for me to see where my skills are.

Welcome back, Nick! Stop "toying" and re-up! :)

Like this Zombie thread, DPC needs some voodoo to bring it back to life.

Voodoo died, but DPC's still here. (Just sayin')

Yes.

Truly, there is no other real answer for the original question 'Is DPC dying?' Deny it all you like, point to the handful or two of new peeps who've joined, but things haven't changed here for a helluva long time and after almost 8 years here, I see no reason for things to suddenly improve.

Just yesterday I joined a site dedicated to another hobby (not photography related), and can barely stay off, because that site is just KICKING. This site has 70 000+ members, it's constantly active, high thread turnover, new members joining on a daily basis, helpful longtimers...just like DPC way back when. But there is no sense of staleness and certainly no favouritism, which has definitely become the rule here.

If your shooting style isn't what the DPC community *likes*, in their increasingly narrow scope, if you don't churn out bland predictable eye candy that appeals to the predominantly N American tastes prevalent here, then fuhgedabout ever ribboning or having your work appreciated here.

In terms of challenges, I think it's time DPC was knocked on the head, but left as an archive of useful knowledge.

Meantime, I think I'll go the route of other DPCers and stick with shooting for myself. And send off the best for stock.

I've picked up a new hobby also. I'm doing one-of-a-kind jewelry designs--bracelets--for me & my friends.

I also feel closed out by the DPC community, probably for different reasons. Not just closed out, but I feel it wants me to be gone. They want no photoshop trickery here--get it right in-camera & upload it directly as is. I'd like to find a site (not deviantart) that doesn't oppose photoshop or post processing so much. But then again, I started out working just for my own amusement. I could easily go back to doing that. I barely had the confidence to join my first online photo community, 11 years ago. I have a lot more confidence now, but no drive to be out there. So if DPC dies, it dies--I'm not going down with it.
