I wake up in anticipation of this weeks challenge to find that I am at an immediate disadvantadge. Corporate America - Like I know anything about that; I'm born and bred English.
I feel that anybody from outside the USA has this week (hopefully unintentionly) been excluded from this weeks challenge. You might say
"you can still enter but you'll have to work harder", which is fine, however, How the heck will anybody know that the shots were taken by people outside the US?
I will probably submit something, but I do feel that the challenge is a little bit one sided.
Oh well, bet get on the net and look for ideas:-(

You could try to show american corporate influence imposing/helping your country.

Maybe talk to a anti-corp person for an idea.

A man in a business suit with pockets full of money will work:)

I hope you come up with something:) Just think along the lines of stocks or business. Good luck !

surely England has notorious/notable corporations too? Some with ties to the US. Or one of our exports? Disney? McDonalds?

Yes Drew and Co were being insensitive. But I don't think you need to feel excluded.

I agree...with all the FANTASTIC suggestions we've had for site challenges...I don't understand...where did this one come from?

It surely doesn't give me any ideas for an artistic photo of any kind at all... stock photography maybe...

I have friends here (California) who tune into the BBC specifically for their coverage of "Corporate America" -- and it has been rather in the news a bit lately.

A typical example of our "system" is that we have zero tobacco executives in prison for defauding the public to the tune of some 400,000 dead per year for the last 30 years, while we have hundreds of thousands incarcerated in Federal prisons for smoking pot.

I dont think it was 'insensitive' ... Corporate America is everywhere ... the US is made up of Multi-national corporations. Corporate America is all over ... not just in the US. Plus, if someone is in another country, the business in that country has influence or even relations with a US company. Be creative, that is what this site is about!

We just dropped Cannabis from a Class A to a Class C drug, so maybe I should go get a joint, spark up and see where my imagination takes me:-)

As a South African Member I also feel at a disadvantage but will try and find something!

Maybe all the whiners should go to www.dpchallenge.co.uk.

Hmm...it says site not found. Guess we will have to live with the fact that the site and it's creator are in the United States.

I seem to remember something about the role of US corporations in South Africa -- and specifically the issues around stock divestitures and shareholders forcing changes in company policy -- had at least some role in changing the nature of the SA government. Perhaps you can find an interesting reference to that...

Well, although at first it might seem excluding.. but really.. the challenge is to find something that represents it. If you are outside of America, that doesn't mean you dont have an opinion.. you might think its slimy and disgusting, so take a picture that represents that. If you have no idea, a few yahoo/google searches and you can come up with a lot.

just an idea :)

Sorry M8, thought "WWW" stood for World Wide Web", not "For American Consumption only".

As suggested in another thread, maybe next week we could do "an English Garden Fete". See how YOU photo that one :-)

OK, while I can't say I'm really thrilled about the topic, instead of everybody slamming on it for being US-centric -- how about someone just ask the guys to change it from Corporate America to Corporate Life. I seriously doubt they did it to intentionally piss off all the people outside the States after all...

Dogman,

After reading your comments I can certainly understand your frustration. That said, I don't think the situation is as dire as you make it out to be.

The various corporate and accounting scandals in the US, and their results on the US and world stock markets have been very much a part of world news. In the US, at least, opinions and trust of large corporations and their upper management is very low. The same is true of auditors as many feel they have ignored their duty to act as an impartial third party and ensure the accuracy of financial statements.
The purpose of this challenge is to depict corporations and their effect on society. Bear in mind though that even if the topic is reworded (which I would like to see happen and will advocate) most voters will be voting with these recent news events in mind.

As for the topic being exclusionary, I don't believe that is necessarily the case. The topic will be more difficult for some members that for others, but that was also the case with stopped motion (difficult with a low-end camera) and City Life (difficult for those far from a major city). That didn't stop some people who were especially challenged by those topics from turning in excellent shots.

That said, I do certainly understand your concerns about the topic.

Yep, but if it was pound notes or euros or aussie dollars or rand then the second word of the challenge means that I should mark it down for being off topic.

I've got nothing against the challenge of "Corporations" (though it's a tough one) - it's the second word that puts me off. See my tongue in cheek suggestion for a challenge on Twickenham Rugby ground. "Sports venues" wouldn't be a bad idea for a challenge. "Rugby grounds" might do at a push but limiting it to one particular example of the subject would be silly.

I am not totally insensitive on the concerns of this being too US-centric, but can anyone think of a corporate environment that affects the world more than Corporate America?

So perhaps here you have a perfect example of the American Corporate consciousness (NOT an intentional oxymoron) in action (NOT inaction). You could take a photo of your monitor with this thread displayed...

As suggested in another thread, maybe next week we could do "an English Garden Fete". See how YOU photo that one :-)

I saw the other thread -- I'll be happy to try that one after I get a submission together for this week. I don't think any of the ideas I've seen here are not worth trying. I haven't always had a good idea (or been able to execute it) but a lot of people seem to manage to come up with some quality work every week.
