Well, gosh, I just entered two challenges! TWO!

Granted, I don't expect to win ("well then why do you bother entering? This is a competition website!") but I'm guessing maybe 7-8 comments between the two?

I'll try to do my part to offer more than 7-8 comments in each of the challenges I entered, though. :-)

Have a great evening!

Tell me which two, and I'll give you 25 comments! :)

Gotta admit... I was a little surprised and miffed at that. The SC who took that action has always struck me as very reasonable, and I thought we had done a rather good job of getting that thread back on track without help... Clearly she disagreed for some reason.

*shrug*

and we wonder why the activity level is down...

I love the creativity this site gives me, but I often post on 500px as well. I think overall, I've just had less time to get out and enjoy photography lately, since my life has been pretty occupied with 14 hour days. Also, it's the middle of summer in Florida and few people want to be outside in the first place.

When I first joined here, I did something like 30 challenges in a row. Then I kind of flamed out with the challenges. After a while I just found most of the winning entries were uninspiring or derivative. They mainly continue down this path in my opinion. There was that brief period with the plethora of expert editing challenges which didn't help either. Now I just float along and vote. I leave comments on every entry which gets a vote of 7 or higher.

I've also noticed a pretty strong correlation that my personal photography has vastly improved since I stop entering challenges. Now this isn't meant to be a complete indictment for this site. If it wasn't for DPC, I wouldn't have lit that fire under the ass initially. This site was the catalyst to many of my purchases that I otherwise wouldn't have bought (105mm macro, softboxes, three flash units, ...). Doing the side challenges really helped; Minso's self portrait and spiritualspatula's choose a lens were extremely beneficial.

If there were more side challenges, I'd be all over them. Sure I could start one myself, but I have this inclination participation would be minimal. The only thing that follows me is my shadow.

Now, I enter the odd challenge in hopes for that brown ribbon. My wife hates the fact I'm relegating my entries for this cause, but it's harder than it appears if you don't shoehorn or DMNC the entries.

I think you managed the impossible: in the "Birds" challenge your entry ended on the 109th place in a field with 108 contestants. Score: -1%.

Congratulations, this is browner than brown!

Combined with this, I don't really think this place is gonna grow any.

Frankly I'm just a little bit ashamed of our community right now.

It happens when there's a DQ without a full recalc.

I still believe that person to be a spammer. I will feel badly if I am proven wrong, but she didn't stick around to participate though she was encouraged to do so. While defending the site I also encouraged her to participate. Maybe I made a mistake.

If the primary goal of this site was growth, the site would be something more like 500x, not dpc.

Maybe a survey would be helpful, like

What do you think is the primary goal of DPC:
a) growth
b) quality of content
c) volume of content

or whatever.

You did make an error. She is now a paid member who has been active on the boards, getting comfortable here and has some images in her portfolio that are quite nice. Her welcome here reminded me of a Monty Python bit "SHE'S A WITCH, BURN HER, BUUUUUURRRRRRN HER!"

Spammers are not the threat to the site that incivility is.

I think the biggest threats to the site is lack of interest from the owners/coders

The community is fine every community has spats and now some of more caustic members have left lets move on but the site hasn't been updated significantly in a decade has it? Where's the motivation to join and care if the guy collecting the cheques doesn't care and have a passion to drive it forward and see it shine.

I think we should have a forum section that is just for spammers or legit biz that want to pl their trade. We can either look at their posts or not. But you know what, some of the spammers actually have a real biz.

90% are bots on steroids, but that 10% are genuine. I got my MOO cards from a spam on here BTW

i agree with this whole-heartedly! and it could be implemented without writing any new code. simply add another forum section. since the sc already has the ability to move threads from one section to another, it wouldn't be a big deal to move any incoming "spam" to the right spot.

and this would give us a place where we could review and debate new products, tools, software packages, etc. i think vendors of any stripe (equipment, software, etc) would appreciate the feedback this site would generate.

-----------------------------------
By the way...

I just compared the number of paid memberships through July '12 to the average paid memberships for each year, and right now 2012 is running ahead of all previous years! on the other hand, this is the second worse year in site history for adding registered users.

i'll agree with you to an extent, especially when a visitor compares dpc its shinier alternatives.

however, when you boil it down, dpc consists of three things:
1) challenges
2) images
3) a forum

even though it has a "community" that behaves much like any large, extended family, dpc is primarily a resource for learning and developing one's photography.

while it's a bummer when someone "outgrows" the site and moves on, i don't think that's as big an issue as when people just leave, or worse, join but never engage.

and that's what i think is the biggest threat to the site: not actively recruiting and engaging new members and not actively encouraging participation in skill-building activities. a great example is that was CNovack's recent push for commenting on the desserts challenge. that type of participation is the thing that builds the site, imho.

Okay, "Your image has been submitted successfully."
to PWO contests.

We'll see how this goes. It's pretty brutal at DPC anymore. That said, maybe my photography has gone way downhill (yes it has, according to the DPC voters). Anyway, in any business, if you don't take care of your customers, someone else will.

There seems to be a lot of familiar names over there... not sure if that's a good thing... transporting sh*t stirrers crap still makes it crap...
