Do you go into a Ford dealership and ask them to help you buy a Chevy?? It is without question that 500px has a very helpful admin staff that will gladly help you with your question, why do it here? Come on people ...where are your manners?? hehehe

I know I have not been participating at all lately due to my wife's medical problem(s) but I would like to ask a few questions.

1. Where or when do you think the side started taking a turn for the worse?
2. Do you think the Admin(s) do enough to keep the site exciting?
3. Did some of the changes in challenge rules effect the site?
4. Did adding more challenges per week spread the community to thin?
5. What could we do for the community to turn it around for the better?

sempermarine's original post was this:

I decided to conduct a small experiment last night. I placed four shots that I processed last night and placed them on DPC and 500px. Here are the stats for the last 10 hours or so. In the past I would get at least one comment. It might just be my ugly mug! :)

My username in 500px if anyone would like to check it out.

I checked out his cool pictures and looked around the 500px site. I don't think my question was out of line. "If it wasn't for sempermarine I would have never known about 500px" using you words..the Ford dealer was recommending the Chevy dealer across the street.

The "Ford Dealer's" name is not Sempermarine, it is Langdon. Helping you discern between right and wrong may be a bit of a challenge huh?

Ivo, I do not know who you are, but from my end you simply seem very rude and therefor the conversation ends here for me. I am however glad that you are all knowing and therefore can teach the rest of us the difference between right and wrong....

Wow, what a passive aggressiveness response. Some of us have better manners than others and do not slight the site we are on in an effort to learn another site. And yes ... you are done with this conversation because it makes you blush with uncomfortablnessness.

Wow some of you have tissue paper thick skins and yeah the pc crowd have got to Strong on here, the nudes are gone because they get voted down, anything challenging and thought provoking gets voted down, I can't think at mo as just woken up (josh - minos) but the photo of the ex with the knife , comments like you're sick you need help etc, it's a photo challenge for gods sake. And let's not get started on gods or the lack of them....

We need more edge and less soccer mum mentality.

I'm with ivo what's your point about 500px? They need those rights to
Show ppl your photos, and to run the print business I bet the terms here are similar.

Giles, there are many ways to communicate with others and even when asked a seemingly foolish question a polite explanation would have sufficed. However, Ivo chose to be rude and condescending. He is not an exception however as I have encountered this before with other members. Maybe some of us are just here to learn and be inspired. Maybe it would be a good thing to consider each other as scholars of the same passion and treat those that need help or advice with respect and patience?

is this the bit you found rude and condescending?

i dont know maybe im blasé to it having worked in mainly male jobs IT, on tour with bands and construction this is timid at best where generally a pleasant greeting doesnt involve the C word. think ppl just need to lighten up and not get so offended, all this stuff about low activity etc kicked off from margaretN being super sensitive to a genuine comment, people just need to get over themselves and get back to posting good photos.

i think the standards have slipped as well, i voted on a few challenges of late and theyve been hard work, maybe 10-20% inspiring stuff the other just making up the numbers,

we seem to have lost a few particiapants of late; allenp, paulbtw, minos, art, tanguera etc i guess summer is a busy time and other projects but i hope they come back. im up for renewal next month.....

Don't write Ivo off......and don't confuse blunt honesty with rude & condescending......he ain't even started being rude yet! LOL!!!

Cool just noticed one of my photos made the thread lol. Just glancing through the thread but I think we go through something similar every Summer and Winter holiday season. I would like to see some updates to the site and perhaps bring back dpl but even without that and with the competition sites (ie 500px, 1x, etc...) I still find myself here. You may have to ask for a critique but I still find this the best place to receive one. Hope to see some changes, what happened with the get satisfaction? We seem to have made a few small changes but that has now come to a halt. I hope to see this site grow.

Yet another example of PC over-run..

You wanna know what's killing DPC? Sensitive people who care more about politeness and rules than good damned photos.

I'm with the crew on this one, toughen up or GTFO, I'll take a small community that speaks its mind without fear, over a community that feels the need to be friendly and polite all the time.

At some point, we lost the family feel, and I think that happened when everyone started double and triple questioning the value of posting anything critical and harsh here because it's pretty much a given that someone will cry.

As for me? I write stuff like this all the time, only to delete it before posting because I know someone's gonna get hurt. This time it's different, but only because I'm pressing the "Post" button.

Now, having said all of that, I love the fact that we're generally good to each other, it's nice to have a group of people who are articulate, well spoken and thoughtful.... The thing is, that none of those imply that you agree with each other, or that you're not willing to hurt some feelings, as long as the venom is truthful, accurate, and intended in the right spirit, I simply don't see a problem. Blunt honesty as it may be called, is a GOOD thing people, learn to love it.

FYI- If you are offended by anyone who disagrees with you, or says stuff that you disagree with, or believes things you think are crazy, then you should go elsewhere, somewhere where debate and growth aren't encouraged, I'd suggest looking at Flickr and the church - as DPC is probably not the best place for you, here we like differing opinions and encourage growth and debate and disagreement.

Whoa Cory,
you make Ivo look like a sweet, innocent orphan child! My apologies Ivo! After reading Cory's rant, it appears that things can get much worse here. I avoid people in real life that speak in four letter words and I find I am not anymore impressed with them in writing either. So Cory, no, I will not GTFO because I paid for the membership just as you have? Photography means a lot to me, more than you could ever understand and there are some artist here on DPC that I downright admire. Your rudeness is not going to change that. However, I will certainly not communicate in this forum again, unless I feel a real need to be insulted. Yes, honesty can be a really good thing and I find it absolutely necessary, but rudeness, not so much...

I wasn't honestly suggesting that you go away, I was suggesting that you stop acting like a kid and realize that while people may say things that don't make you feel warm, peachy and fuzzy, you need to just deal with it and stop telling them they're wrong.

It is not your job to tell me how to behave, that is my own decision, and you calling out people who are only telling you the truth by publicly rebuking them and calling them rude, etc... Effectively, you took a very impersonal statement, and turned into something personal about someone else, accusing them of being rude... Well, let me tell ya, if you can't stop doing that, I will be relieved at the lack of your involvement in the forums.

But, even if you do choose to not join in the forums, please do keep entering, you've got some nice stuff, and I'd like to see more of it, while perhaps hearing less of the aforementioned soccer-momming of the forums.

You know what I find hilarious about this whole thread.

The post is asking about why activity is down on DPC. And the last page is a great example of why it is.

Such a sad state this place and it's members is in right now. I'm headed to visit with Art.

If you want rainbows and unicorns blown up your butt, DPC isn't the place.

You can't just post a photo and expect it to generate comments without drawing attention to it, no matter how awesome it is. If you post some photos and ask in the forums for feedback, you'll get it. It may not be what you want to hear, but you'll get some honest feedback.

+1

The thing is......I have found in most cases the comments and critiques I don't like to hear are the ones I most need.

Think about that as it applies to your images.....

Cory, Ivo, et al. Do NOT equate honesty with rudeness. You can be perfectly honest about an image without being mean, rude, or condescending. The only reason to write rudely is to provoke a fight or to shut down dialogue.

antje1777 - if people like you do not participate to show how to disagree with integrity, then you are part of the problem.

Wow did I miss something with ivo's post? He did put hehehe at the end of the sentence to draw attention to the fact he wasn't being rude or was that just lost in translation?

(sigh) Yes, I guess I'll step in here now, too.
Mostly just to wonder when this noisy little teapot tempest will get sent to Rant.
Maybe until then, folks will take Tanguera and others advice and play nice for a while.

The argument I'm making here is that everyone's perception of "rudeness" varies, and wildly at that. Some people take even the slightest critique as rude, others are far less sensitive about it, and while I don't advocate rudeness, I also don't like the feeling of questioning everything I say 50 times before posting it because someone might take it in a manner other than that in which it was intended.

That's unfortunately the world we live in. You have to PG everything down so we don't trample the delicate flowers.
