i have been looking for old forum threads with her in it, for entertainment at work, but could find none. were they all taken down?

I don't know. She did come back at least twice. Once as "espy2" and again as "Limerick". In the latter case, she told a great sob story (I don't remember the details) and members started taking up collections and donations. I know Bear had even offered to send her a camera.

fascinating.

Outside of DPC, she was also a "pageant mom/grandmother/official or something" and had also been booted from a variety of websites, including one about kittens.

It's all such a shame. I only knew her as limerick, and I liked her very much. She had incredible talent. It was hard when everything came crashing down. I didn't know what to believe anymore. I wish we still had access to her profile. Her painted with light series was quite good, and I'd love to go back and learn from it now that I know more what I'm doing.

i wish i was around for these antics

Here's a classic - I love this one for the way it looks as though things are under control, until the all-out attack on the last page.

i came on board in 2009 but apparently didn't pay close enough attention to see some of this at that time, what interesting reading.

That one is probably the "best" Rose thread. She went non-linear when people from DPC went over to her website and posted her rules for behaving. If you search for her on Google, you can find her ranting in the same manner on other photo sites and a cat breeding forum.

Another "character" was "nsbca7". He got lots of people riled up too, but Rose was the champ.

Then there was the whole "Rikki" friend voting debacle. You think people wail when someone leaves today...

I saw the old forum on that -- I wish these profiles were still around. It sounds like he was a good photographer, but I've never seen any of his stuff.

the old forum threads do give more information.

went through a bunch of these - some absolutely crazy stuff has gone down here.
amusing that i was thinking to myself while looking at some of rose's challenge entries "man, she was talented... or WAS she?", then sure enough someone else brought that up further in one of the threads.

at least it made the morning at work more interesting than sitting here watching COBOL jobs run on a mainframe :)

The rocket engine didn't really go "Boom!". We just underestimated its performance...significantly.

He was blowing stuff up with dynamite.

A lot of the old timers come here because they enjoy the clique - they fear going to a new site where they will be reduced back down to pleb status.

This site is dying. It looks so dated now. Seriously, spend a few hours going around the `new kids on the block` then come back here. Its like walking back into a 1970s working mans club that is still open for its few old members to hang out in and talk about old times; same old faces, same old conversations, same old cliques.

I'll never pay another single penny to this site again unless there is a massive overhaul - but I doubt the owners have the time or inclination to try and resurrect this tired old dog.

RIP DPC. :(

Doesn't look too RIP for me :) You're still here and don't give any examples of better sites. So, it isn't too bad here, or is it?

Yup. Haven't found those better sites. 500px is kinda fun, but doesn't really draw me, plus all the comments are "wow! nice!" kinda dull. Love 1x, love the stuff on it, my best isn't good enough, so can't really play. So maybe I'm missing the better sites. This is the one that works best for me.

would still like updates to make it better, however.

the wow nice's are the worstttt. i've been playing around with it for a couple days and that's literally the only thing people say. also 500px doesn't seem like there's any good voting system. it's not like dpc where the images are shoved in front of your face and you have to make a decision. i don't know how the whole "rising up in the ranks" thing works at all.

It's a shame that the old Model T DPC hasn't had even one major renovation but it's not like there's better sites out there that you can join and offers more substance. Most of the newer sites are just re-branded versions of old sites with Facebook-like features. Some offer more exclusivity so the product looks shinier but that's about it.

whaaaaattt? it's only 43 with humidity. It sometimes gets hotter than that in my oven, and that's IN my house, i don't see the problem ;-P

*smiling sweetly* Oh, I'm sorry, did I forget to mention that one of my two jobs is in a restaurant kitchen? Even with the back door open, the heat and humidity are staggering.

Also, I only just got AC a week ago. And virtually every job I've had has been an outdoors job involving a great deal of physical activity - riding/training horses, teaching lessons, managing barns, the list goes on.

Not everyone is cut out to be a desk jockey.

Heh, restaurant kitchens get really really REALLY hot especially in the summer, and I have to work weekends and usually evening weekends too, making very little $$$ and doing really unglamorous hard slog...as is/was the working with horses, starting early and finishing late and driving sometimes 120km in one day, again for very little $$...and I am a photographer but not making my living at it!!!

But it does sound very glamourous, I guess :-)

DPC isn't dead yet, but I joined back in 2006 and as you can see from the chart a few pages back, 2006/2007 were years of peak activity for this site. It used to be nothing to average 200 entries for a challenge, and Free Studies would have up to 400 entries. Many commenters in this thread also remember those days, and comparatively, yes, things have slowed down a lot.

Still, everything is relative, and I can't think of any other site where there is such a wealth of info on photography as a whole.

I agree with everything you've said. Well said! I've been a member since 2006, too. I would add that every business has a cycle. Trends and stats are important. I'd love to see the stats for DPC bottom out and turn up. But, the old trite business saying is, "If you don't take care of your customers, someone else will."

Thank you! Very much appreciated. For what it's worth, DPC will always be my first love. I've learned so much from so many amazing photographers on this site. Without DPC to keep me challenged I most likely would have stayed in a rut and eventually put my camera down prematurely. I have recently been trying a few things outside of DPC with some minor success. Just yesterday toddhead and I decided to start a photography business. Semper Photography catering to what we know best, Marines. We are both highly motivated individuals and have set some lofty goals. I'll keep you posted.

You do realize of the last 10 comments you have received only one barely rises above "wow, nice"... The days of quality comments are long gone. I go back to some of my 2005 entries and marvel at how long the comments were compared to now.
