I decided to conduct a small experiment last night. I placed four shots that I processed last night and placed them on DPC and 500px. Here are the stats for the last 10 hours or so. In the past I would get at least one comment. It might just be my ugly mug! :)

definitely below the level that it used to be

i few points.

1. 500px has WAAAAAY more users.
2. This site is terrible at showcasing work, i have no idea when people upload new stuff unless they promote it. I dont go looking for new updates.

this site could use a serious facelift in functionality in certain departments and i doubt we ever get it.

well its not really a critique site. if i want real critiques I'll post here for feedback or on POTN.

500px is just a showcase site.

Echo, echo, echo...

I almost feel like I'm talking to myself anymore when I post here.

slow..slow...slow....very little action here

I spend most of my time at Mu-43.com

Most of my interest is now micro 4/3rds

Great people...fun, but no contests

has dpchallenge changed it's layout a single time since it opened? it's kind of uglyyyyyyyyy.

Is the activity lower than when I joined? Yeah. Is the signal to noise here still higher than anywhere else I've found? Definitely.
You won't get 10,000 hits or responses to your posts, but those that do respond are nearly always thoughtful, thorough, and helpful. As much as folks think of DPC as bickering, it's really quite low on that spectrum. And honest. The comments are honest reflections, and they carry critique which is not found elsewhere that I've found.

We've had a spat of bad challenges IMO... the triptych thing is good, but the recent bunch haven't inspired me much.

Most of the recent challenges have been taken from recent suggestions by users -- compare the list of topics with the challenge suggestions forum -- and this has usually been the case from the beginning ... however, to paraphrase Scoop Nisker*, if you don't like the challenge topics, suggest some of your own.

ETA: I think you mean "spate" -- we do try to avoid having spats here (unless they're on your shoes).

I'd agree that participation is down a bit in the past month or so here. Normally, challenges pull 125-ish entries, but lately they've been running 85-ish. The number of comments seem to be down as well.

it's also the beginning of summer - when many people (especially with kids) are taking vacations and not at work browsing DPC on the company's dime.

Ah, "spate", yes. That's the word I was thinking I was using.

I have suggested a few challenges and try to bump the ones that I like.

On this note, there's definitely an old guard which lingers around and keeps this place behind the times. Recently there was talk about changing the challenge entry size from 800 pixels to something larger and there was a lot of resistance. My iPad pumps out 2000x1500. Aside from the people still using their favorite VGA monitors, there's no reason not to increase this size. The cost of storage would be minimal on the server side.

In the five months I've been here, it seems more people complain about their score now than before. Your photo sucks contrary to what you think your entry deserves. I personally think if more people were willing to hear honest criticism, this place would be much better. I give critiques all the time at 1x, most negative, but people are willing to listen. I've never been given a warning or reprimanded from the moderators because the critiques are always detailed and honest. In the couple of times I've attempted that here, my inbox fills up quickly.

As a programmer, I see many little things which could be improved upon quite easily. There was the fiasco of Skip being DQ'ed because his entry was out of the acceptable period. That was his fault, straight up, but it would take five minutes to fix that.

Also, why geriatric grey for the background? Since we allow user profiles, it would take minimal effort to allow different colour schemes for different user. Personally, I love black everything. I know some others prefer white. I've yet to find anyone who purposely chooses grey.

I'll think of other things to rant about as the day moves forward.

I'm not very active at the moment, simply due to life circumstances. BF moving in soon, juggling two jobs, freakish heat and sky-high humidity levels, trying to get my house organized...yeah. Tough to find that sweet spot when free time and inclination meet.

i a haven't been active either, i have been spending lots of time shooting for money and i dont have time for personal stuff.

It's the most neutral color possible. It therefore won't affect your perceptions of images as much as other colors. Kinda like a clean pallet.

Personally I have no problem with the layout/look. Works for me. You start allowing custom colors on profiles and it would turn into myface.

I agree. Look folks, this is a contest, your photos are going to be judged, and that does mean sometimes I'm going to have some very not-nice things to say about the image that you have submitted.

If this bothers you I have two possible solutions:

-Recognize that your photo does not reflect upon your personal worth, get over it, and try to improve.
-Stop submitting images to challenges.

That's pretty much it. I'm tired of not commenting on stuff because every time I do someone gets hurt about it. So, if you're gonna get hurt, I simply must leave it to you to figure out, because as a voter here and a commenter, it's not my job to make you feel good, my responsibility is only to honesty, the image and the challenge, if it doesn't work, it doesn't work. If I don't get it, then you have failed to help me grasp the image, if I hate your processing then you either are doing something that I don't get or you don't know how to use the tools, if your composition is poorly done, then you did a poor job at composition in my opinion.

In the end, my vote and my comment are only my opinion, and I will not continue to hedge constantly, or sugar coat things endlessly to avoid hurting the overly sensitive feelings that some folks around here have.

I honestly wouldn't care if DPC shrunk to 25 active users, as I know that there will always be a group of photographers here that are going to drive each other to greater heights, and who will always provide a fool-proof feedback mechanism that doesn't lie --- the voters. Try to find someplace that is truly better, and if you do, please let me know as I'd love to see it.

If it's linked to the users account, then no one would see it except you. It could/would default to this drab grey when you first register, but when you log in it would alter to your account preference colours.

All good points about commenting.

But you left a comment I didn't like. I swear, if you were standing in front of me, well, let's say you wouldn't be standing. RAGE!!!!!!! (whatever the proper emoticon to show this is a sarcastic comment)

i always though that we should have a check box for people that dont want comments, but then again everyone wants comments just not negative ones.

I've seen that suggested before. Well... an "I want honest critique" box... I like the idea.

“Compassion is an unstable emotion. It needs to be translated into action, or it withers. The question of what to do with the feelings that have been aroused, the knowledge that has been communicated. If one feels that there is nothing 'we' can do -- but who is that 'we'? -- and nothing 'they' can do either -- and who are 'they' -- then one starts to get bored, cynical, apathetic.”
- Susan Sontag, Regarding the Pain of Others

"Is it ignorance or apathy? Hey, I don't know and I don't care."
–Jimmy Buffett

"Scientists announced today that they have discovered a cure for apathy. However, they claim no one has shown the slightest interest in it."
-George Carlin
