Im NOT complaining or anything but how should we rate the cityscape shots in the landscape challenge? Are cityscapes considered landscapes? If not, I rated them normaly. Should I have?

Should any photo that does not meet a challenge at all get a 1?

It all depends on YOUR interpretation of the challenge. I consider them valid... as I am in the city and seeing anything remote to the typical "landscape" is unlikely. So I allow for these submissions. But these are YOUR votes, not mine. hehe

Due to the fact that not everyone has beatiful landscape around them, and in my eyes a cityscape is just like a landscape, I am voting them like normal.

I am going to have to disagree here. I call landscapes and cityscapes by different names (and seascapes for that matter), and so they are different things, so I will not be voting these as highly as a proper landscape. Something that doesnt fit my opinion will not get more than a 5 from me.

I find it kinda funny when people ask others how they should vote on the pictures. Do they not have an opinion of their own? I always vote on what I think of a picture. This includes whether I think it meets the challenge or not. Everyone has their own opinion.

The following are excerpts from www.dictionary.com

1. An expanse of scenery that can be seen in a single view: a desert landscape.
2. A picture depicting an expanse of scenery.
3. The branch of art dealing with the representation of natural scenery.
and
1. A portion of land or territory which the eye can comprehend in a single view, including all the objects it contains.
2. A picture representing a scene by land or sea, actual or fancied, the chief subject being the general aspect of nature, as fields, hills, forests, water. etc.

In my opinion if the photo meets the chaqllenge and is technicaly sound it gets a five then subjectivly I add or subtract up to five points to get my final rating.

Have to remember that a lot of members here are in winter. Some (like myself) are surrounded by nothing but brown. No snow on the ground, no pines or other evergreens around. Just ugly, so we have to rely on something else to help us along.

I will vote them as equals. I will not hold someones geographic location against them. I posted this on another thread about this topic. Ansel included buildings in his landscapes. They aren't classified as city scapes. Neill has fences in his landscape shots, Shaw has people, Wolfe has closeups of trees. These people are masters of landscape photography. I am gonna question them?

Who is to say that their opinions on what is/isn't a landscape are worth more than someone elses?

and I'd like to disagree in the other direction as the term 'Urban Landscape' is pretty common when referring to the appearance of a city - so I'll be voting the cityscapes on their merit as fitting the challenge.

Konador, I will always defer to known experts in their field. I will always have my opinion, but if some of the top names in photography today have defined their version of a catagory, I will go a long with it. There including the very objects we are discussing in "landscapes" in my mind validates it. Once again, who am I to argue.

I'm happy that you posted this information because my photo definately is a landscape according to this -- I just wish that those marking me down would see that.

I know, quit complaining:)

I just want to share to you all how I voted.
1.) If I see buildings and no land then you get a 1.
2.) If I see over a 3/4 or more of water in the photo then I vote a
1-3.
3.) If I see land covering 3/4 of the photo, and have barns, bridges, trees as part of the photo then I vote 6-10.
4.) If I see alot of buildings, houses, bridges, and trees and they are the main subject which would take up at least 1/2-3/4 of the photo, then I will vote them 3-7. Because I feel that they met part of the challenge , but would like to see more landscape.
Know just because you have a photo that has all land doesn't mean I will give you a high vote. It has to be well shot, clear, in focus, good framing, good lighting, and to me say "Wow".

This is just my opinion and I do understand yours, Don't get upset because people feel and think differently. I do it my way and you do it yours. I am just following the rules as you feel you are. :-)

I see nothing wrong with this forum. we are here to learn and have fun. It's good that we are trying to figure out what the general concensus is about a particular term. I think a cityscape can be considered a kind of landscape but when you want to get specific about it you say 'cityscape' and not 'landscape'. See what I mean? I think landscape in the most agreed upon view is where the lay of the land is prominant and where buildings, objects, and people can support that view. I think it depends on what is considered to be the main focus point in a photograph. I will be keeping a very open mind and focussing on quality photos.

That makes two of us. Quality will be first for me. I continue to look for the photo that says "WOW" to me. Then, I'll keep an open mind on the definitions.
I'm trying to improve my art of photography, not my ability to critique a dictionary.
