You stand a much better chance in this one if you do something that has nothing to do with Zen.

LOL John, that really made me laugh

Last time there was quite a flame war debate in the forums about what zen really was and was not. As always, it comes down primarily to visual appeal and needing only some connection to the topic for the average viewer.

Okay, how many people will set out to shoot this?:

How may will succeed? How may will fail?

Should be fun, though voters have been finding my stuff sub-meh lately.

Well, I know humor doesn't go over well in these...

This is better than an Abstract challenge, because at least in a Zen challenge I understand why my score is low.

After looking though the previous challenges I have no idea what people think zen is.

I think we need another heated debate to figure it out.

[sarcasm]
THAT'S THE WORST IDEA I'VE EVER HEARD!
WHY YOU THINK PEOPLE NEED A HEATED DEBATE IS BEYOND ME!! WHAT POSIBLE GOOD COULD A HEATED DEBATE ABOUT ZEN PHOTOGRAPHY DO?? EVERYBODY KNOWS YOU JUST DRAW WAVY LINES IN THE SAND WITH A STICK, PHOTOGRAPH IT AND GET AN INSTANT 10 + FAVORITE!! GAH! WHY I BOTHER SOMETIMES IS BEYOND ME
[/sarcasm]

Seriously, i think 'zen photography' is just "a pretty picture that makes you calm", and that's going to be different for everybody based on how they relax. I expect to see some big scores on rocks/landscape/seascape/asian building images and some low scores on just about everything else.
I'm thinking that i'll take a picture of rush hour traffic and call it "how i choose to relax" - see how low my score can go ;)

Looking through the previous challenges, make sure there's water somewhere in the photo. Automatic boost in score.

I'm going to dress up like Jim Gilchrist and pretend I'm shooting immigrants, we'll see how that goes over.

interesting how an entire religion can be summed up as something that "makes you calm"

Lightening flashes, sparks fly!
In one blink of the eye,
you have missed seeing.

A westernized, easily digestible and fast definition. Ironic, isn't it?

It's so 1960s, lol.

Not enough elephant-headed gods in Zen Buddhism in my opinion. I can't see how anyone can get excited over a religion that has no elephant-headed gods.

That makes it hard to account for the Church of Monday Night Football ...

We can have an "Islam" challenge next. I predict lots of suicide bomber pics and fake jihadis.

Ganesha is enough for me. I'd follow that elephant anywhere (carefully, of course).
:)

Ganesha rocks. He's my fave. Om gam ganapataye namaha.

Zen photography is one of my favorite to shoot. This will be a fun and creative challenge. Now off to figure out what I am going to do.

Zen is not an it.
It is an is.
