after seeing zigomar's post of "firework", i remembered loving that shot too, and went to look for my comment. which then led me to look for my entry from the same challenge, which led me to ubique's comment which i'd like to share:

This is an automatic 10 from me. I have often thought much the same thing as the fellow on the right, and for much the same reasons, when reading some of the rant threads here at DPC.

Your 10 is not just a bonus for your shock value BTW, it's a considered judgement on the merits of the photograph as documentary art. There is much more going on than just the 'joust-of-signs'; there is an accusing finger (ironically pointing at 'God'), and there is the gay kiss as well (amounting to another kind of finger). And the 'PHOBIA' t-shirt. All of it contrasted with the serene ignorance of the perpetrator.

i feel so lucky to have caught his eye more than once.

I am intrigued as to why you would enter this in this thread.

Considering that this is a challenge suggestion dealing with Ubique, I truly am puzzled as to exactly what message it is you are trying to convey.

If you are suggesting this topic as a challenge suggestion, then why not simply start another thread.

Ray, I'm all for a challenge in the style of Ubique and for expression of appreciation for Paul, but feel uneasy about creating sacred cows, no matter how much I admire them. I'm just moving the flags out a bit while there is an audience to allow others to look in a place they would never think of looking or would feel uncomfortable doing so. Personalities aside, her earlier work still has merit and was highly praised. All the same, apologies to those who regard this as hijacking, my post was aimed fyi (plural) not discussion.

Fair enough... but creation of sacred cows resides exclusively with the masses, and should they opt to do so then it will happen.

I was simply curious as to why you mentioned this in a thread with a specific challenge suggestion as opposed to suggesting a separate topic. There is no disputing that she does indeed have talent, but that was not the topic of discussion in this instance.

I do appreciate your intent... I was simply curious as to the timeliness of and choice of location for your topic.

If we run this challenge and click our heels together three times, maybe he'd pay us a visit.

I'd love to see this happen.

My final word is that nothing in art is more important than curiosity. Plant your flags as far from your own back yard as you dare. Then if you can still see them from that comfortable chair on your porch, move them out again. And again.

i loved this so much i added this to my profile last year as my forum sig, but oddly, it doesn't appear

glad to see i'm not the only one who appreciated this nugget of wisdom

Well, we would have to move the flag poles beyond Ubique's style, a movement inspired by Ubique. Definitely would be better as a side challenge rather than a single challenge, so you could develop a body of art. Damn those zeros!

I miss him and I would love to have this challenge, looking at his stuff and reading his comments was always an inspirational experience for me, also if we did have this challenge maybe he might come back and inspire us some more, that would be awesome.

I was just looking at this .. Perhaps my favorite photo in the entire collective dpc portfolio. The amount of indecision he was able to create
in the jury is unbelievable. It reminds me of a quote from one of my favorite photographers: Paolo Pellegrin (ubique was actually the one who first introduced me to Pellegrin).

"I’m more interested in a photography that is “unfinished”—a photography that is suggestive and can trigger a conversation or dialogue.
There are pictures that are closed, finished, to which there is no way in."
-Paolo Pellegrin

This challenge needs to happen.

That quote is phenomenal. Thanks. Yes, I will remember it and would love to shoot for this challenge.

Do you mind if I borrow that quote? It's perfect.

It's a great quote and one which i'm constantly thinking about and paraphrasing. And, yea, i learnt it from Paul as well as being introduced to the work of Pellegrin (amongst others) by him.

I just pulled up some Paolo Pellegrin images.... Amazing stuff! Inspirational and humbling at the same time.
